I understand PGI's current stance regarding ELO is not to present the rating to the player; it's not used by the player for any reason and it is possibly subject to being gamed as a system.
On the other hand, players definitely want to know their ELO so that they can get an accurate idea of their actual skill level in regard to other players.
I feel that a workable compromise would be the construction of 5 ELO classes, ranked from 1-5 or whatever you desire. This will keep the actual ELO rating from being games while still giving the player a rough idea of where they stand. Are they in the top 20%? 40%? Are they only in the top 60%?
Mainly it comes down to understanding how you stack up against your opponents. We don't need the exact number; we don't need the ability to say "My ELO is 617, yours is only 357. **** noob."
We need some kind of system so new players can know who to take advice from, so veteran players have an idea of where they stand as well as something to work towards, and elite players have something to show for the work they put into the game.
To reiterate: we don't need the exact number. We just need the rough idea where we're at.
