So I hopped into testing grounds first thing, and I noticed two ninja changes;

Firstly, my 'mech autotargetted the first 'mech it visually acquired (I did not press R), and secondly, there's a new damage texture being applied to mechs.

It looks like a pile of barnacles. It basically looks like the Misery. They look like pockmarks rather than exposed internals.

(Oh, and, they changed some of the maps' loading images)

Autotargeting is nothing new, it is in the game since I joined (that means at least since open beta).

I hoped long for a better visualization of damage taken on a mech's model. They constantly improving this. First with (some) broken weapons meshes. Then losing the paint and showing the pure metal underneath it (but it was to "perfect"). Then they added rippled structure. Now those barnacles. They would be nice if they weren't used so extentisively. On Misery .... ok, it should be her characteristic attribute. But not on every mech. I don't like the amount of "craters" that appeared on damaged sections. Should be only a few, mixed with scares cut from swaying lasers and bigger wholes blasted out from missile hits. As if it is now, they just recycled Misery's attributes for all mechs.

PGI, please keep up improving the models :):

Damage effect instead of showing mech's insides now shows charred with bullet holes (even if lazer is used)
Note: weapon damage not shown on missile bay doors.

i'll be honest i like the old damage textures better. It was cool that internals showed after damaging a mech enough. but if they are sticking to the bullet holes approach. maybe that means they wont' have to spend as much time making individual damage textures for each mech. and more time to spend making custom models for mech substructures.

the degree of pocking increases with the number of hits. I do wish you would get "internal" visuals after the armor is stripped, which might be coming. We will see.

cracked cockpit glass would be cool to see for damage textures too. (from the outside)

Saw it for the first time earlier, I prefer it a lot to the chrome look before it. Had a few occasions where a beat up mech walked past and near blinded me due to the chrome reflecting too much.

Yea, not a big fan of the new damage. It's ok I suppose, but nothing special *shrug*

Well, they obviously have to tweak it. There should be a maximum amount of decals per bodypart or something like this. And lasers should obviously not cause it, but keep their old glowing effect.

It seems they just made one overall damage texture.

It would better to see separate damage effects per "types" of weapons, so it would interesting to see "cuts" or gouges from Energy Weapons and Holes from Ballistics/Missiles, if it is possible.

I don't know, but I really really like it. It adds a lot to the game.

I think laser scarring in combat is already a good start to this.

the chrome was the result of a bug. it was never supposed to be that reflective
