So my question is should i sell this mech and buy a different one OR attempt to modify it into a stronger mech?

The Spider chassis is a pretty advanced level chassis, and not very newbie friendly.
In my opinion, the Jagermech is probably the easiest chassis to pick up and play. It's very diverse, it can take a few hits, dish out damage, and can also move when it has to.
If you prefer the high-speed light style of play though, I don't think you can go wrong with a Jenner.D or F variant.

You couldn't keep the last thread? *Sigh.*
Here. The 5D in epic action.
The build give or take. Armor allocation optional.
Commandos, Spiders, Ravens and Jenners in general are fairly high-level mechs to use. Those who do use them are usually very experienced players. Jenners being the easiest of them.
Hunchbacks and Centurions are usually considered to be optimal mechs for new players. You can never build a Hunchback wrong (except the 4G).
With the default rigs you can do rather well. An example is the 4H below.
Default rig 4H. Pre-HSR for ballistics (had to lead a lot more and had a cannon fire delay that's gone now).
This Video is made by the first contest's 4th place winner for Mediums, 7NationArmy. Unlike current contests, it tallied total games over the weekend counting every single match. 7NA only played about 9 hours that weekend.
I'm leading the lance. 7 and I were both recording, but all footage here is of him. Verrick at the time was a brand new player. The entire squad is made up of Centurion trial mechs. It gives advice on how to use it. We won 4 out of 5 matches. In the one we lost, 2 of us crashed to desktop at the start of the match. In the matches we won, ~none~ of us died.
I am also the dancing Cicada at the end.

Here is another Spider 5-D in action. If it's too long for you, just skip to the end to see the dmg.
The spider can be very beastly in the right hands. Also, I totally agree with Syllogy - the Spider is not a good light mech to use as a learning platform. If you want to get into light mechs my advice would be to start with Jenners.

First spider to ever kill a Raven 3-L after being attacked first. Pre-HSR, XL 170 engine.

Really it comes down to what do you want to play? Do you like speed? Want firepower? What balance of the two?

All good Spider pilots are effing lunatics. It takes a lot of skill and a lot of crazy to get the best out of them. But when they do.... it is truly a thing to behold.

I agree that it all boils down to what you want to play. Also. ^ This guy is pretty good. I'll vouch for him.

Please, make it easier on other new players that come looking for the same info. Keep all questions to one thread until everything related to it is answered.

i personally didnt go into the light category after several months of piloting meds and heavies. my 1st light ever bought was the SDR-5K outfitted like this: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...1a39379882714bd. u wont be able to get much kills but most ppl would ignore u in a spider anyways allowing u to get free shots at em.
its best if u level the spider chassis with a decent group. solo runs with it can make it quite a chore to max out efficiencies. i also wouldnt recommend selling the mech + engine unless u dont have mech slots left (or if u really dont like em at all).
if ur keeping the SDR-5D i would recommend a build like this: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...b3e563e8fcf18cc
very effective at close range and against other light mechs.

If you are new, you will want to start with a medium or heavy mech (heavy IMO). The Hunchback is a good starter mech.
Light mechs in general, and Spiders in particular, are only really suited for advanced players. They can be very effective, but they require a specialist approach and if you are new they probably will not be a lot of fun. Intuitively it may seem like the cheapest mechs are the "beginner" mechs, and heavy/assaults are advanced, but it is almost the opposite.
I'd recommend saving CBills and buying a Medium or Heavy asap. You will have a lot more fun and some breathing room to learn the game.

I went ahead and sold the SRD for a Jenners F i believe and i have been loving it.
Running 6 med lazers and im just a little glass cannon.
I had a great match with this build today where i got 3 kills and 2 assists
Due to alot of advice in this thread I am now working towards unlocking a heavy or Med mech but I would like to say that I enjoy Hit and run tactics and Long range combat (two completely opposite styles i know

Also, do you by chance happen to like the post you made very much?
