Are they intending on a way or is there a way for me and my wife to both play in the same battles? We are both sitting in same room with side by side pcs. So far all I have found is a random battle thing which won't put us into the same battle.

You can create a group of 2-4 people.
Go to the group tab, next to your friends list, and click create group at the bottom. Then send your wife a group invite by clicking her name on your friends list and click invite to group.

Yup this. Once you're in a group, the group leader (whoever invited) has to close the social tab, click on the READY button which replaces the LAUNCH button, then reopen the social tab. Once all players have hit READY, the leader can hit LAUNCH (which only appears while the social tab is open).
Good on you/your wife for getting the other one of you into MWO! I play with my gf occasionally, but I think the MWO community doesn't see a lot of folks getting their significant others into the game, which leads to an overwhelmingly male population. Typical for games, I know, but tiresome after a time.

On the bottom right is social. Click on that.

Next click on the group tab.

Choose 4 player max.

You now have a group. Click on friends, the friend (or your wife's) name, and then "Invite to group." Sometimes left click works, sometimes you have to use right click.

Both of you need to ready up. You can launch only when both are ready, and you are on the Group page of Social.

Oh, and you should probably friend your wife. Pretty self explanatory. But be wary... she will be able to know whether you are on simply by signing on... so when you're "working late" smashing Drac face, she'll find out...
