Back in the day I inherited and ran a small MW4 league so obviously I feel that I probably know better than PGI/Pirahna or anyone else how to do the social combat part of MWO. And gving this situation I am compelled to comment on something that is not even in the game yet.
(No really. It is a sickness. I can't stop myself. I MUST comment even though it is useless noise that will not have any effect).
I have read the posts by staff on their plans. In general, cool beans. Lets get the party started already. I have a couple of concerns about issues not touched upon that I hope are being covered and perhaps an extra idea or two. Here are just a few to keep this post from getting way too long.
(1) Merc v Merc battle for planets. Works for me, most leages were essentially just that. However I saw nothing on how scheduling would work or on initial ganing of the worlds. My assumption is that the point is to set up merc vs merc games. Getting two specific teams that were often in different time zones together for matches was always the hard part of a league. I hope Pirahna has factored in seven to ten days at least for the challange to be set up and a way for the two units invloved to discuss the time and date. Then there has to be a back up plan for what happens if one side does not show. (And the abiulity for each side to launch with less than a full 12 mechs).
Of hand, my suggestion for a no-show is that if the attacker is MIA, the defender wins. If defender is MIA then a randomly selected groiup of House warriors droping from the house where the planet sits is slotted in. That way planets are not given away for free, The initial onwership of a merc planet could be the same way. A group picked from a House defends it until a merc unit owns it.
(2) House Affiliations for Mercs. Some type of long term contract that allos a merc pilot (or group of them) to drop in a House cue for House v House fighting. Merc units will probably only have a few scheduled battles per month and the members need something to do in the meanwhile. Maybe the House members vote once a month on which Mercs will be extended a "contract" (which is really an invitation to play on their behalf).
(3) Lone Wolf "Bandits": Eventually perhaps a game mode that is a Bandit Raid with something defended by a House side and attackers that are drawn from the Lone Wolf players. This would pay better than average for the Lone Wolfs if they win or snag certain objectives. As LWs get no Merc or House bonuses, access to a special game mode would offset this a bit and start to define meta roles between Merc, House and Lone Wolf.
Okay, three points is enough windmill tilting for now. I will probably be back with more - because as I pointed out. I can't help myself.
