I've read it being mentioned in passing, but I've been unable to glean from the context what it is or how it functions.

Thanks.

Are you referring to the capture accelerator module? Or are you referring to matches on Assault mode where players go straight for the base and capture it before the first shot is even fired... causing both teams to receive only 25,000 ?

It's the artificial limitations in the size of the engines you can put in the lighter 'Mechs to keep their speed below ~150km/h

Each mech has a maximum engine that it can hold. This is technically the Engine Cap, but it is often referred to as the Speed Cap.

For a while, when there were significant net-code issues, a mech's maximum speed would be capped at I think 145, regardless of actual speed shown. This was also referred to as a Speed Cap.

Speed Cap also refers to a "speed capture", where a mech or group of mechs (usually ultra-fast lights/mediums, often with ECM) rush the enemy base as fast as they can, skirting the edges of the map to avoid enemy contact and end the game by capture win as quickly as possible.

All three have some level of controversy surrounding them, but odds are if you've seen it a lot, it means the third one; most players agree that it's a pretty lame tactic, but some people don't care and run it anyway, since it DOES get a win.

I was referring to the speed/engine cap. Thank you.

Why is it controversial, though? I have only seen people say that it sucks or whatever without going into detail. People tend to assume everyone knows what they are talking about, you know?

Most of those who hate it do so because before this was put in place back in CB, people could put any size engine in any mech, which allowed for some pretty ridiculous builds, like 200 KPH jenners and 150 KPH hunchies. Basically, they want to be able to make any mech as fast as the ones that are supposed to be fast, and the fast ones even more ridiculously fast.

I think most of the controversy on this particular issue has died down, but a few people still gripe about it.

Oh. Well, looking at it with the eyes of a newcomer, the end result seems pretty reasonable.

It is controversial because some mechs should actually be able to reach a higher top speed than the strict speed cap allows. Mechs like the Jenner have a maximum engine size of 300, when combined with Speed Tweak, and according to the rules (because math), they should run at 152.7 km per hour. But they don't, because the speed is capped at just under 150

Yes, I'd agree.

I think it was needed because it let the mediums do the light role better than the lights could. Ill never miss those small laser fastbacks.

The top speed could also make other players in game lag pretty badly, as well as exascerbate the warping problem they had at the time.

Once they bring more stability to the servers the cap will be removed. The Flea will be DOA if they don't, and M.A.S.C. will be useless as well.

The engine rating cap will stay though, for the best.
