I am stuck on a decision and the thing I need to know to fix it is how do you unlock the master slot?

In the pilot tree yeah?

Complete the elite tree in 3 different variants of the same chassis to unlock the master slot.

Though why getting one more module slot should get you so worried is beyond me.

Actually, it is complete the elites in any 3 mech variants of any chassis within the same weight class (For heavies that could be Jager DD, Dragon 5N, Catapult C1) and you can access Master. Condition is you have to own those 3 mechs until you achieve and unlock the Master.

To reach the Elite tree, you have to complete the Basic tree on 3 variants of the same mech chassis. (All 3 Jagers, for example). But after that, you only need 3 mechs in the same weight class to progress to Master.

Seismic Scanner and UAV are coming.

MAG vision mode and some others are slated on their way.
