Hi, I haven't found any solution on this one (just another thread in another forum describing the exact same problem)

Since the last patch my graphic processing unit is crashing my complete system because of overheating. And I don't mean "crash to desktop", I mean "black screen, better hold off button for 5 seconds".

After some tries I figured it ONLY happens in the mechlab. AIDA sensors tell me my heat goes up to 90°C+ and suddenly the screen will go dark, getting no more signal from the pc.

There is NO other game I have this problem with and strangely it only happens in the mechlab, NOT in the game (which should be much more resource eating!)

Has anybody else encountered an similar problem and know what it might be? Perhaps some graphic overbuffering or something?

I already updated my graphic drivers (nividia gforce 420) and re-installed the game.

Best regards!

Sägefisch

PS: Its not only in Mechlab, its in the home screen too as soon as I logged in.

Software will only show up an already existing hardware problem when it comes ot temperatures.. SO its not MWO's fault.

it is likely that one of the following is happneing.

1) Faulty GPU cooler
2) Dirty GPU cooler
3) Poor case airflow
4) Gone off TIM on GPU

it is also likely that ur pushing that poor 420 to max usuage for longer periods of time than its designed for. its not a gaming card and as such likely has poor cooling not designed ot run it at 100% forl ong periods. MECHBAY has a tendancy to run all GPU's at around 50% , so if ur GPU is overheaitng at only 50%, start worrying. take a good look at the card, clean it, bump up the fan speeds using ap rogram like EVGA PrecisionX, if that fail try taking of the GPU heatsink and fan and replacing the TIM.

Alternatively the GPU could be rendering hundreds of frames per second in the lab, causing it to run at 100% load. Forcing v-sync from the Nvidia control panel should fix the issue.

If you press F9 in mechlab, it should report framerate (as it does ingame). Mine stayed at 60fps while in focus and lower fps when some other window was open and selected.
Game itself doesn't have vsync enabled or forced.

Regardless of FPS, the GPU should be able to handle 100% usuage without overheating and shutting down. If it cant, theres a problem.

i can confirm the "heavy-load" part. even before i click the "Launch" button my GPU is working like its game-time already....for no apparent reason (doesn't matter if i open the mechlab).

This game also makes my GPU heat up quite a bit but it's because of work load. In general the board manufacturers try for quiet boards so they set the GPU fan speeds low. Get a GPU utility and increase the fan speeds. I use EVGA Precision X

Even though I don't have technical issue's with this problem, I do find it strange that the mechlab makes my card work like it's ingame.

Also the game doesn't overheat my card, but it does make it sweat. I don't think it's a fault on PGI's part though, games like Farcry 3 and the lot that runs on the Crytec tech all run hot.

Playing Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Deus Ex, "Snore"derlands 2 maxed out and TES Skyrim on as high as I can get it doesn't have this effect. The only other game that I have that runs hot is X-com: Enemy Unknown and that runs on a UnrealEngine that was badly optimized.

Btw, I use MSI afterburner for OSD info and fancontrol. Made by MSI, but it works with every card. (Use ASUS hardware myself)

Caused my GPU to overheat and shut the comp down without even clicking launch. Installed a GPU monitor to keep an eye on the heat while in the Client. Had some air so I blew out whatever dust bunnies were present around the card. I also had a decent 12 volt chassis fan laying around. I plugged it in and angled it up at the bottom the vid card. Heat now peaks at around 65 Celsius.
Problem seems to be solved as I have not shutdown since.

Gnome that's interesting because i have the exact opposite experience to you with mech lab running. http://imageshack.us/f/13/mwolab.jpg/

Thats after the game has been up for a few min, cards arnt at 100% or running hot as hell 50fps solid when in focus i had vlc playing in the background and VMWorkstation running 2 separate vms in the background.

Starting to think MWO is really a new stress testing program for PC's

The problem is that they messed something up since last patch with GPU power management.
The CPU does not fall down to P12 power state in the mechlab anymore - it runs at P0 with full clock and memoryspeed causing the system to heatup with no need for this.

Did you try setting a hard cap for FPS to something lower like 50 in the User.cfg?

The command should be (taken from Crysis 3): sys_MaxFps = 50
