I don't have access to the game client at the moment, but I wanted to play around with Mech configurations. Since this is still closed beta, there are no 3rd party apps that can do that yet, but there undoubtedly will be after the game launches.
To that end, I was thinking it would be cool if there was an API that could let you import info into an application. Info may include:
1. Mech info and current loadout
2. Currency
3. Market info
4. Equipment types
This would let people try and share Mech configs. An even bolder suggestion would be to create that application on this site (web based or download).
This model has been used successfully in other endeavors and would be a nice value-add to an already awesome game.

Learn how to do it with pen an paper, thats how we old timers did it back in the day
Second, API is a stupid useless feature that never should be integrated into games. It just makes the players whiney and stat score focused, at least in the case of EVE online. Its cool to help track your skill plan in that game, but its 100% pointless for killmails (basicly load out of what you were in). Killmails in the sense of EVE online if translated to MWO would basicly show what mech you pilot, what planet, your guild, and what weapons were on it...which is great because you are then ridiculed because it will be considered stupid failfit mech that would never work (common human behavior) and if your score isn't with in .000000009% of 51% you suck hard (gamers..the hard core competitive types...are the biggest losers on this planet if you need to find your niche in this universe where you are just Captain Badass that every must respect it...except out of game it means nothing). On the other hand, players get all whiney when you self destruct your ship in EVE online because it prevents a kill mail (think rage quitting) but the amazing thing about EVE online is that you have 2 minutes before the ship goes boom (CCP put that in with the creation of self destruct) but the players still whine it needs to be fixed (yet they have those 2 minutes to score the KM before the ship goes boom, they just need to up the amount of damage in the shortest amount of time). Its like, you have 2 minutes bro...try harder or just be butthurt at how much you fail. And yet there is this thing called ganking as well in EVE online, basicly massive alpha shot assassin attack they can pull off in 10 seconds....they just can't / won't / refuse to fly the bigger ships that have the DPS they need to crack harder ships.
Back on topic...if you played WoT you will relize that MWO doesn't need things like API. How hard is it to write down 4 med laser, an SRM 6, AC/5 /w 20 shots, max armor on this mech frame, and hit send. Yeah, don't need API as mech warrior and battle tech rules are pretty simple as it is.

Are you serious " Learn how to do it with pen and paper " ?!? and whats this about eve, wot and stuff like that how is that related to api ?
If you want to write and hang it on your wall then please use this but don't say its stupid to have applications that helps .

All joking aside, providing an API by which developers could make some nifty little apps tying into the game could be beneficial to the community. I wouldn't necessarily support things as complex as actually building mechs, but providing the ability to monitor stats, events in game, etc. through an API could enable the community to make some pretty nifty tools.
The nice thing about making the API is that you can leverage the community's development skills to extend the game experience, rather than funding all of the development yourself.
Given that Mechwarrior probably has a pretty geeky computer-sciencey type community, we could probably make some decent junk if given the tools.

I would say an API is hardly useless. First off, we don't even know all there is to know about this game yet, so there may be things to track / manage that we haven't really thought much about yet.
As for players being whiney and stat score focused... The API didn't make them that way... many people are that way by nature. It is a competitive game after all, so yes... shockingly, some people attempt to "keep score".
Regarding the Eve Online API... it has enabled a LOT more than tracking the skill training que and Kill Mails. EveMon, EveHQ, and EFT all use the API for things beyond that. Then you have SomerBLINK. APIs can really add a lot to a game. The fact that some annoying twits will use some of the capabilities in arguably childish ways, ("My stats rawk harder than urs, LOL...") is hardly a compelling reason to forgo the other possible benefits.
The way to deal with the twits is simple. Just realize that whatever they are saying reveals far more about themselves than about whoever they are ragging on. Their presence / activities should not be cause to keep potentially useful tools out of the hands of people who could make the game an even better experience.

Something like EFT is exactly what I had in mind. Basically an offline replica of the Mech Lab that would let you examine the viability of load-outs without having to buy and guess. If the API provided access to the types of weapons and equipment, the stand-alone app could always have access to the latest modifications without having to re-code it.
At the end of the day, somebody will create an offline load-out / spec tool. It happens with every game. Might as well embrace it.

Looks like somebody doesn't know what API means.

Like the ideas posted. Just want to add recruiting tool to the list , as API provided access to a character's skill can help a unit to determine if a recruit is suitable based on the skill set. Similar to how it is used in eve corps recruiting.
