2) targeting alerts your team! (without typing or speaking), even through buildings and terrain (most the time), that you are locked onto an enemy and firing at him which tends to encourage your allies to come help you kill it. ($cb,mxp, gxp, savior kill bonuses, kill assists, so forth)

3) allows LRM'rs to also get some love in, so long as they are within 1,000 meters and not too blocked by terrain or buildings. (bonuses)

There have been many times that I got ahead of my team in a slow mech and walked into a group of enemies (I know a noob move.) My first thought was, "I am going to die."

But I targeted one and and kept that target while I found cover.
The next thing I see is my team coming to kick a$$ and LRM's raining from the sky.

Always target if you can.

While most of your post is agreeable, this one is actually incorrect I believe. Your team cannot infer which mech you have targetted, they can see however any radar contact you have (targeted or not, as long as ECM is not a factor). Targetting info gathered will transfer though.

Enemy mechs that are detected, but not targeted, have hollow red triangles. Enemy mechs that are detected and targeted have filled red triangles, so even without using a chat utility, it is possible to do some focus fire by only shooting at filled triangles (another reason to hit 'R'). It is also a good idea for a scout to stop hitting R to cycle through detected enemies, once the scout encounters an enemy with the downward slanting arrows that indicate inbound LRM's.

The first is that simply by having LOS for 5 contacts on your radar, even without targeting each of them, they will all appear on your friends' radars (assuming no ECM interference).

Is this actually true? I've NEVER found it to be the case in ANY of my games. Ever.

Edit: It's quite possible that, not being in my teammates cockpits, I can't see what they do or do not have LOS to, but I know I've been a heavy behind a hill with a light teammate who runs over and spots the entirety of the enemy team. I do not get to see the enemy team on radar, even for a brief moment, even if they're 50m away as long as I don't personally have LOS and they're not actively targeted by the scout.

I would flip the advice: Your minimap is not radar. People only see what's targeted, so make sure to target stuff yourself.

That's true... A possible solution would be to add a setting like "auto-target" (on by default), which targets the mech you're hitting automatically. Might be a little help for beginners and the rest just disables it if autotargeting is not desired.

This is already in the game. just hover your targeting retacle over the target for a short period of time, and it auto targets

No it isn't, and no, it doesn't.

PRESS R FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. OR WHATEVER KEY YOU HAVE BOUND TO "TARGET" SOMEONE.

sheesh.

I can't count the times I've watched some scrub, either through ignorance or just plain obtuseness, fail to TARGET the TARGET.

there actually is an auto-targeting feature. don't believe me? go into the training grounds, run up to the first mech and hover over it for a few seconds. it will target it. it only does this however, if you don't currently have a target. if you kill that target, and don't have another targeted, the next mech you put your cross-hares over in visual range is targeted. I personally confirmed this in a conquest game on my A1 streakcat without hitting the target button once I got 3 kills.

So it's useless if you have anything selected, or there is more than one enemy mech. Seriously, you want to cycle through them with R every time.

I agree, hitting the target key is best, I was just making my point that an auto-target does exist, however limited

Great OP!

Clarification of the confusion caused by later posts which intel is transmitted to your teammates:

Teammates, that do not have sensor contact themself, can only see units you or other teammember have targeted (default R key) atm on their HUD and minimap alike. So you should target them all shortly if you want to show your team there i s more then one mech in a certain position they do not have line of sight to to.
There is no auto transmitting of all your sensor contacts that you have not targeted atm.
Furthermore a targeted unit´s target info is avaliable to all teammmembers.
ECM (either being in the "bubble" or having to transmit through the "bubble") prevents all data transmitions and you will get no info at all from teammates through it

An empty red trinagle over the head of a enemy unit shows a target in your own sensor range that is not targeted by anyone else.
A filled red Triangle indicates a target in either your sensor range or a transmitted target that is targetted by at least one of your teammmates.

Hah. I just started about a week ago and had no idea the R button did that. I would see people target fast as hell and would wonder what toy I was missing.

FYI hovering over someone does work sorta. But I could never figure out how exactly it worked. The amount of time you needed to hover varied from short to "well he's standing still, Ill just make a sammich and itll be ready by the time I get back".

As for the LRMs. If they are shooting from way back out at just under 1000 meters away I really dont want/need their support as they are quite often just as much danger to their own team as they are to the enemy team (who if they are smart will just step behind some cover for a short time). Quite often these LRMs will end up hitting a teammate just after the target went down or someone standing on the wrong side of a building behind which the target is hiding from the LRMs (Only the targeted mech has teh incomming fore warning, not your friendly mech who happens to be in the flight path at the wrong time).

Any good LRM user will be up close at around 180-350 meters away from his intended target and will do the spotting for himself. He will then know if his missiles are on target or landing useless in a hill or a building.

Any good LRM Boater knows by the traffic light shown on his target (press 'r' btw!) if his Missiles did connect or if they shot wide/ short. You don't need direct LOS for that.
Oh and another request, kinda in the same area - hold your lock if you see smokestreaks rising from your rear ranks. your friendly LRM support gives you a hearty thumbs up. Please.

Conversely, do not just blindly fire as soon as a target shows up. Your scout might just be showing it for the 3 seconds he needs to shoot at its back and disappear...
