From searching I have found that you do this by clicking to view your profile, but that page has nothing but fields for my country, pilot name, email and real name.

Go to http://mwomercs.com/profile/faction to change your faction.
Factions don't have any in game advantages or disadvantages at the moment, so feel free to ignore them for now.

Hai, at the moment it is basically just flavor. It will become more important with the Community Warfare feature which is yet to come, at which point faction membership may bestow certain advantages such as equipment discounts or special insignia and paintjobs. Above all, it will create a metagame where thousands of players in a House can work towards a single goal, or where mercenary companies compete for contracts and capture/garrison worlds marked as a target by the House employing them.
If you like the setting and have already decided for a faction, feel free to sign up with them right away, for the various communities already exist, both in their specific subforums here on the MWO website, as well as (in some cases) having external websites where its troops gather and discuss as a sort of sub-community. It can be fun even just talking about your favorite group, discussing its background, should you be so inclined.
