There's a compass on the screen in the middle of your view, slightly above the absolute center. I recommend using that.
*shrug*
Not that hard to figure out how directions go:
___N
___ |
W--+--E
___ |
___S

the main point is that is not as quick. during combat that extra second can make a very large difference.
i find a static compass to be much easier to use for navigation in general as well.

I mention that in my post already, that requires you to first completely turn your view to look in that direction. If its not within the torso twist range of your mech you actually have to turn your heading to look there.

Exactly.
Take for example if you are heading and looking SouthWest, target shows up on the radar, his real direction is NorthWest of your position. Currently it would show up to the right of center on your radar, meaning you have to figure out that its about 90 degrees right of your current heading. With static radar it would be in the top left quadrant, much faster to convey to your team and less likely for error in the heat of battle.
Again it would need to be an option, because I imagine people new to the game (or simply with this preference) would like to keep relative positioning to help ease them into locating target, learning torso twisting, etc. But for some reason even in other games that give the option for non-rotating maps, I go with static non-rotating (Battefield 3 and Planetside 2 both have the option).

However I can easily see this being a toggle option somewhere in the future and that I have no problem with.

However, I'd probably not use the option, but don't mind/care if others would want it since it is a matter of preference.

I see his point since the minimap changes you have to tak a second to orient your self to give directions ETC. I'd prefer and absolute map and have the sensor wedge turn on it. I've seen both options in games.and I always prefer this .it would be a good customization option so folks could tweak it totaste. just like hud configuration. a map zoom would be nice as well.

I wouldn't use it, but I think it's a good idea, that sort of toggle is sometimes present on other games that use minimaps. Different people navigate differently. Hopefully it isn't a difficult thing to add in.

Well I thought about that at first, but then I realized why would anyone not support having it if it were optional, especially if it weren't the default after being made as such. So I still think a better question to ask is whether a static map appeals to you or not.

Also a hardcore no HUD option.
