Anyone think this might be fun? Start out with like a stock commando, move up to an atlas, and finish with a stock spider K. Maybe just do 5 mechs overall, with respawns, of course. Do a 20 minute timer if necessary.

Nobody would make it past the Spider 5V.

I wouldn't do every mech, that'd take way to long. Actually, they could randomize it, that would be pretty fun. You might actually get a chance to see which stock mechs are far better equipped than the others. Through in a 1% chance to roll a hero and it might encourage buyers.
Random light that changes each death -> medium -> heavy -> assault -> spider K

I agree, it could definitely be fun. I wouldn't mind seeing this as a Solaris-type game mode.

Normally I'm against such silly game modes, but I must admit that the notion of a commando getting a kill and then morphing into a larger mech is funny.

I would say that the new mech just comes out of one of the arena garages, instead of magically morphing mechs (that is the lazy way).
I don't really like this mode in FPS (I don't like going from one gun to another to another) but it might work for Mechs; It could get people to play mechs they don't own.
The Arena in Front Mission is a good example but it is old much better systems can be made now.
