Ya.. I gotta wonder. If something is within 150m, seems like visibility isn't a problem.

I guess a light mech could run up onto the enemy, and drop a UAV over them, but even that seems kind of weak given it's only in the air for a max of 60 seconds.

It's already been said that the ranger is 240/300 m (with upgrade). Maybe if the light 'Mech launched the module near the group of enemies hiding behind an obstacle, allowing his team 60 secs of uninterrupted LRM rain...

If people think of AMS as "the thing giving away my position," then the UAV will be … ?

the thing giving away the enemies position as they waste ammo shooting them down. :P

Hmmm...

240 meters is better. I think I can see what they are trying with this; I just don't know if it will work out that way in game. The big benefit here is that it will spot & target all enemy mechs it can see. For spotting, this is a big deal. But the light mech has to get very close; then has to stay very close.

I suspect that this is expected to play with the seismic module as a ***-for-tat thing. ECM lights with a UAV trying to get close to spot the formation being spotted by a mech with a seismic module. Might be interesting if there was a payoff for the scout mech here to take that kind of risk. Pre-made groups bringing a missile boat or such could see a payoff with it, I suppose.

Like a few of us folks have pointed out, looks like a light 'Mech scouting tool.

While on a scouting run, when near to the enemy (but preferably behind cover), pop one in the air near to the enemy blob to let the friendly LRMs rain down.
Most folks probably don't bother look straight up (yet) so the nearer you pop the UAV, the less likely it'll be destroyed.

Good point Kommisar, the Seismic Module being introduced at the same time might not be a coincidence!

The seismic signature blips can give you warning that a light 'Mech is skulking around nearby, and even if you never actually catch the enemy scout, you know which direction to look for a possible UAV launch.

I noticed you said this, though:
"But the light mech has to get very close; then has to stay very close."
I might be missing something, is there a reason the light 'Mech needs to stay close?

I might be reading this wrong; but my understanding was that the UAV stayed directly above the mech that launches it. I assume (perhaps incorrectly here... I'm stuck at work!!!) that the UAV would move with the launching mech.

Use UAV as a nutcracker to find the angles you need to close range on a sniper bubble and brawl their faces off. Same as Seismic.

That's my (attempted) plan, at least.
