So I had a match just now that pretty much underscored the above as rule #1 for mech piloting. I hopped into a pug match in Tourmaline against some really hefty opposition, including not one, but THREE Atlases. Add to misery, they tossed in a Dragon, Hunchie, Commando, Catapult, and a Jenner to round it off. Pics or **** below. (More after the break)

So during the match, being a Cata K2, running UAC5's and 4x mediums, I generally sit back, toss a lot of ammo downrange. For the first minute or two, that worked just fine. Damaged one of the Atlases at range, one or two of the others took a couple rounds to the torso, nothing serious.

Then I managed to take one wrong turn too many straight into not one, but BOTH of the other Atlases. Apparently they turned around into the main body of the group behind me while I was busy with sniping the others. I basically ended up going toe to toe with first one, then the other, pretty much shouting the 'This is crazy, this is crazy!' mantra the whole time. Managed to keep my head and pump about 80 UAC rounds into the both of them. I survived by about a thread, but took BOTH of them out (as well as the dragon, I think it was), with a lot of luck, and a little help from my friends ;p

So object lesson here? Keep your cool. Sometimes when you think you're most screwed, is when you catch a lot of luck. Steel nerves and quick thinking gets you partway there, good timing and good aim from your crew will bring it home.

I've survived in stupid situations like that before, but the majority of the time... you get blown the **** up! Not trying to lash on your parade or anything, but if it were just you against those 2 atlas, then they either found a more threatening target to shoot at... or they were using joysticks! :)

Everything you say is true, but I think you were very lucky here.

No discredit to you; but clearly they shouldn't be in Atlases.

That's kind of the point, though. Sometimes, the overwhelming odds you're theoretically facing will be piloted by complete idiots, or something will happen to tip the scales. If you panic and flip your ship though, then it won't matter because they'll be able to kick your cheeks up between your other cheeks anyways.

Stay cool, keep your finger on the triggers and fight as hard as you can. Yeah, nine times out of ten it won't matter...but that tenth time you'll take out two Atlases and a Dragon. Or two Cataphracts and a Stalker, in a one-legged Cicada. Those are the moments you remember later, the ones that keep you going when your face gets shot off by a hexaparticle Stalker for the eighth time that day.

^ This.

I agree in part with the 'They can't have been very good bit'. But the problem with that is.. you never know. Even the world's best gamer can have an offday in which a 12 year old girl can bust him up. The question is always 'Is today that day?'.

Every third day I play this, I have one of those days where you can't shoot straight to save your life. Your aim is just off, or you're piloting sluggish, or you just CAN'T seem to get behind the damn building before those missiles hit. But the point is, as said above, THESE are the moments you keep playing the game for. That adrenaline rush when you want to scream like aforementioned 12 year old girl, but you keep your crap together and keep firing, and against all odds, it completely pays off well and above what you'd ever hope for.

That's the whole point of it. This may not be an everyday event, in fact it's probably good it's not. Having to work for it is a good thing. But you never know when that AC/20 will hit the canyon wall INSTEAD of sanding out the last 5 armor and digging into your mech's CT slot to blow the engine.

Oh, I absolutely agree with you and this thread; I mean, at the least, whatever damage you deal is going to be making it easier for your team mates to kill those you couldn't. I'm just pointing out that there are so many poorly piloted assaults out there.

Don't describe or blog or tweet about the problem. Do not talk over with your friends right away let it stew a little in your mind so you can settle doen a little. sometimes well-meaning friends will sympathize too much which may only add fuel to your fire and get you even more upset.

I think this thread would be better suited to the Barracks forum.

I really don't understand why everyone gives the Elo system so much grief. Even if it's not perfect - and it's not - it's still miles better than the endless string of 8-1 stompings we had before. Are folks really that upset by a weighted matchmaker? o_O
