Ok, it's finally sinking in to my thick skull that I run my Jenner too slow. I was able to get in a couple of games with Koniving again last night. I did download TS, but I don't have a mic. So I was able to hear him. The advice to build a twin ER PPC Jenner if I'm just going to run slow anyway is kind of what triggered my brain. Sorry btw Koniving for legging you (embarrassed again) when we brawled those 2 lights trying to cap our base.
So I rebuilt my 2nd Jenner back into a 5 JJ, 2 ML, 1 SL, SRM 4 with the XL 300 back in, and started practicing high speed runs and turns with the JJ's in the training area. After sort of getting the hang of it, I dropped into a game. I changed my strategy to just trying to be a pain in the butt to the enemy, and not trying to kill anyone (which I couldn't manage anyway). Once we got positioned, I went full throttle (138K), and pretty much stayed there.
Big difference! First, I didn't die right away (a big improvement), second, I realized that most of them couldn't hit me, even when I had missles incoming. I just had to keep JJ turning back and forth. I ran the full gauntlet of the enemy line several times, kept puttng pressure on the Atlas ( I even jumped over his head and alpha struck him once), and was probably a major annoyance for a few minutes.
Only problem was we had a lone medium that was being circled by a Spider, and I changed gears and ran over to help the medium. The Spider immediately changed targets and focused on me (oh joy), and I countered by slowing down to try and hit him. I had already taken crit hits to my torso when I jumped over the Atlas, so I was a soft target. Didn't take him long to finish me off.
The end result was I had 1 kill assist, one spot, and 137 pts of damage. The funny noob thing is, that was my second highest scoring match ever. If I hadn't switched priorities and went after the Spider, I probably would have scored higher. I just couldn't leave that med to fend for himself. I hope he got some good hits in on that Spider while it was killing me! Lol.
I think I'm starting to actually learn (ahhh, my head!).
Btw, is there a way to change the reticle color from the default yellow?

No way to change HUD reticle. Mouse sensitivity slider has been added to OPTIONS instead of having to do the stupid user.cfg hack as of 21st patch. From what I have gathered everyone has it turned down to under .50... mine is at .2. Dunno how my 5 Days in the Life of Newb thread got necro'd. I did read it again with Day 23 trained eyes and even laughed at myself.

You can, in theory, use your video card control panel to change the hues. This would change all hues, however.

Set my mouse sensitivity down to .3. That was a big help. It no longer looks like you gave a toddler 6 energy drinks, a chocolate bar and a laser pointer to play with when trying to keep the reticle steady.

About the Spider, I hope it wasn't me. As a Jenner pilot, it is sort of expected that you'll take out the lights, so keep working on that. The reason is that only other lights and a Cicada are fast enough to be able to keep up with something like a Spider. Unfortunately, Spiders are also really, really, tough to hit even for another light. (As you found out.) Keep at it, it does get better. One thing that you need to remember is that with Jump Jets, you are actually more maneuverable than ANY mech without. Use them to your advantage. Small bursts while turning will let you change directions very rapidly. All too often I have seen light drivers seem to forget about their jets in combat. Also, if you feel you need to slow down, don't slow down so much that you become easy for the other mech to hit you. One more thing, if you're one on one versus a mech, try to get a feeling for the timing of their shots. It will become second nature for you how long it takes an AC20 to be ready to fire. A friend of mine said that anything over 100 damage in a light is decent. Keep a mental note of what you think you're averaging, and you will start to see that you are steadily doing more and more damage as you become more comfortable.

The Jenner 7f© doesnt have any weapons that can be 'locked' on.
That is reserved for LRM and SSRM2.. and that is all.
All lasers are point and shoot.
Also, FYI, for anyone new reading this. Don't buy any of the © mechs. +10% experience is a waste. Spend your MC's on Hero mechs so as to earn +30% Cbills.. much better..

Sorry Flak Cannon, but you need to read all replies before responding, because Artemis and locks were covered many pages ago. I agree about the +10% xp. It's actually better if you spend MC on premium time because then you get cbill and xp bonuses on whichever mech you're driving at the time. The reason xp bonuses are a waste is that eventually you will probably have mech xp that you simply can't use. (This is my own situation on several mechs, so I speak from experience here.) However, with any c-bill bonuses, you can continue to buy mechs, engines, modules, or other upgrades.

I play the jenner quite a bit and my main advice would be to build any setup around the XL 300. DHS, Endo and FF are also priority, in that order. Add max armor, rounded down to closest half ton.
For what's left, play with it. I use the 6 mlas version with JJs, but it would probably not work very well for you as you need to be pretty accurate with the shots, as you overheat pretty fast. I'd suggest the trial setup, I think it's pretty solid, or 6 Mlas and drop the JJ for more DHS (dropping the JJ would be dropping the main strength for a good pilot, but I think you can try to learn to walk before you learn to fly ).
In any case, play around, don't get frustrated when you die and try and pick your shots, fire when you think you've got a good chance of hitting, as it's really painful when you fire a bad shot and then in the recharge time you get a perfect shot opportunity but it's wasted. In the long run it makes more sense to pace yourself.
Playing lights is overall pretty hard these days, due to HSR, which I'm sure you'll hear a lot about, used to be much easier. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, overall, but still it's noticable. Don't expect stellar results. I sometimes get myself killed in the first 2 minutes as well and I'm a reasonably OK jenner pilot. It happens. Mostly I'm mad at myself when it happens as it usually means I was somewhere where I really shouldn't be but got cocky. You'll get the feel for it the more you play. You are a scout, but mostly a jenner is also skirmisher so shoot at stuff that's easy to hit and busy shooting other mechs. Never get caught in the open.
Also, me and my buddy play together quite a lot, we have similar results on score tables on average, but we run completely different style of setups on the same mechs (and long arguments on what is better:)). Always go for something that complements you as a pilot, not something that is "the best" based on forum warrior consensus,
Hope some of that helps and have fun. I know the first weeks are hard, but this is, at least for me, the most fun tactical shooter I've ever played. Give it a proper chance and there's a pretty good chance you'll be hooked in no time.
P.S.: I like the X5, but I think Jenner D is a superior mech. I know most people would disagree, but this is another one of those where there's general consensus and what... feels good for you as a pilot. Both are solid mechs though.

if your aim is bad.. why not give a mech that uses streaks a try? I'm not sure what lights can use them outside of the raven 3L, but there might be some that have room for 3.. these hit 100% with lock. they just don't work on ECM mechs,
I also find i do better with an AC-20.. you don't take that many shots.. atm, i run with 3 tons of ammo, which is only 21 shots.. you basically take your time, and really try to line up your shots.. I have improved.. i have gone from around 40% hit, to almost 60%.. Keep in mind i tend to fight lights a lot, protecting base, so that is part of it.. but still, my aim has defiantly improved
I know you are enjoying your light, But playing a medium/heavy, and being a support guy, may help.. It is a lot easier to hit a assault, than something smaller and faster.
A heavy, with an AC-20 and streaks might help... Personally i an giving an atlas a try with streak/ac-20 a try. I finally bought it, and getting it dialed in.. Now i just have to build up the nerve to launch into a match with it..
I have changed my thinking a bit too.. being alive longer is worth it.. a few less mechs on the map, makes things a bit easier. early match i have been taking a lot more care to not die, and keeping armor on my mech. Give up that shot of opportunity, if it means you are going to take a nasty hit..
I have been spending a lot more time piloting, than shooting early in matches.. My average time to a death has improved by a couple mins.. which has improved my ability to help the team..

That would help. TBH I thought you were using a joystick and I'm watching you trying to hit a slow spider with PPCs while stationary like "...put the joystick down, and pick up the mouse."
