I've been thinking about setting things up so that mouse controls torso but the left stick of my 360 pad controls legs and left trigger is throttle. Let me know how that part of your config works.

You are free to do what you like, but being an isometric first-order joystick (force sensing joystick generating velocity commands), an x-box controller is at a disadvantage against any zero-order controller (directly manipulates position) such as a mouse (but not limited to) since the fundamentals of the game are coded around zero-order inputs. If you go the x-box controller route howevrer, use an emulator to make it not just work, but work as well as it can.

...but I recommend reading my
post on controls as they pertain to MWO before committing one direction or another.
Maybe I'm weird, but I'm actually much better at tracking targets and making snap shots with a stick than with a controller. I can't make deliberate, placed shots with a controller for beans for the reasons you stated but for everything else, I'm worse with mouse.
