everyone has a different definition on what is considered a "waste of money"
time is money. saving up c-bills to buy a mech takes time. if your time is valuable to you, it's not a waste of money to spend money rather than time.
This. I'm just a blue collar factory worker guy, but pulling an hour of overtime will net me roughly $50. That will cover a new mech and a month of premium time, and it gives me extra brownie points at work too.
Now, I enjoy playing more than I do working, obviously, but when I'm at home with my family there's a hell of a lot going on, so I can't just buckle down and "grind cbills" - too many distractions. So, yeah... It's pretty trivial to pick up an extra mech in a month.

Im sorta in the same boat, however rather then round off a mech set for me I would prefer to save my money and put it towards a hero mech. Premium time is a bit of a waste for me as I dont enjoy the sensation of being 'obligated' to play or I'll have wasted money. Conversively a hero mechs +30% cbill boost is always there and helps tremendously to maximize the reward I get for what time im able to put into the game. Now forking up real cash, even if its quite a bit less then a hero mech, for a grindy mech that really dosnt do anything for me is pretty much a kick in the cockpit. (Especially as with said hero mech, id be able to grind much more effeciently for said cockpit kickers.)
Indeed. I usually keep premium time as well (with both premium time and hero mech bonus, cbill earnings are quite nice), and I always prefer buying a Hero if that's an option, but sometimes you can get interesting oddball mechs very cheaply with MC. As it stands, I have a Heavy Metal, Misery, and Flame - all of which where the first of a series of three variants. Getting a Hero for your first helps build a lot of cbills while you level it, making the purchase of the other two mechs much easier.
But, without the sales, I'd never have bought a bunch of other mechs I've got in my stables - a DDC, a 4SP, a 4X cataphract, one of my three cats (I forget which was the sale mech), an Awesome, and one of my Spiders. I've never regretted any of them (well, I suppose I sometimes regret my spiders, as I'm really just not a light pilot), and it's great to have all manner of oddball mechs for those times when you just want to do something different than your normal mechs.
