Okay so first thing's first: This is obviously a rough idea that would need some tweaking because tonnage differences, so hang with me on this.

I'm going to run the assumption it's a 12v12 game as that game size should be released before the game is officially released.

1 Assault per lance, with a maximum of 2 per team.
4 Heavy maximum per team
unrestricted medium per team
2 Light maximum per lance. with a maximum of 4

it's a little restrictive, yes, but it still leaves the game open enough where I don't think it will cause excessive queue times (unless you run purely assault mechs).

Combined with some lobby system that allows players to switch lances and the ability to queue by weight class instead of by mech, and choosing mechs in the lobby, could increase the level of strategy used in the game and keep the general flow MUCH better.

Granted medium mechs may need restriction later on, I feel having this kind of class balance could keep the flow of gameplay away from herpaderp alpha striking assaults and instead push more DPS-oriented gameplay, and encourage players to form subgroups instead of just zerging around the map.

If it's too extreme, it could even be some form of "Structured Matchmaking" alongside the existing, for players that would prefer this kind of setup instead of all assaults all day.

It all depends on where they take the community warefare in the future. Dropweight has been used in various forms over the years from the literal amount of weight a dropship could bring to the greater the weight the more it cost to ship a mech to the battlefield. Battlevalue used in tabletop might actually be a better way to gauge things instead of weight, this forced players to pick and choose what they brought to the game so bringing a assault, three mediums and two lights might end up against four heavies a light and a handful of infantry.

This would make a top of the line hero mech decked out in clan tech be costly to field and in pug terms would be more likely to end up with standard issue hunchbacks and jenners. (actual numbers would vary im pulling numbers out of my *** right now but you get the idea)

Your system discriminates against those mechs on the low end of the weight scale in their class.

You might want to instead consider a +/- 10 ton restriction per chasis.

Thus if you drop in an awesome you have a chance of facing down a Cataphract, Awesome, or Highlander which is a much better match than facing down either a highlander, awesome, or Atlas. An atlas of course fights either an Atlas or a highlander.

Or if you drop in a Cicaida you fight a jenner, raven, cicaida, blackjack, Centurian, or Hunchback giving a slight potential advantage vs the current system.

The dragon then fights a hunch, cent, catapult, or cataphract which is better than definitely fighting a catapult of cataphract.
