I participate because it costs nothing but the effort to click a link, and who knows, you might get ridiculously lucky.
If there were any sort of entry fee, I wouldn't bother, because the only people who have a chance of winning are the top 1%, and that same 1% will continue to win every tournament.
Now, if they had weekly challenges that could be completed by anyone, who would then get a reward, then there would be a point, because it would get people more interested in playing. Something like, get 50 kills in a week, or destroy 200 components, or even just play x games with this or that class (including trial mechs).
As it is, this is just a way for the few players that play all the time to pat themselves on the back. 99% of us have absolutely no chance to ever win these. And even when you have it stretching over 7 days, the same players are going to win every day. This is not making the game more fun for the vast majority of players, because the vast majority of players have absolutely zero chance of winning anything.
There's no reason not to opt in because it's free. However, there's no reason to actually participate and try to win.
If you'll note: Koreanese has thusfar won 5 times in 2 days, and is set up to win two more times today, and probably two more every other day this week, and probably twice overall.
That's real fun for the rest of us.
You're not really making the game any more fun, PGI. Please redirect your efforts into improving the game for everyone, instead of only the top 1%. Fix bugs; reward players for playing, not for being able to live with two hours of sleep a day; add new content; balance the weapons and equipment.
The tournaments are a huge waste of effort on PGI's part. They think that high "participation" in a free contest means that they're popular.
Put a 1MM C-Bill entry fee on the next tournament like this, and see how popular it is.
