No, we wouldn't.
We see more basecamping. You honestly think people would go medium for speed, when they still can't carry guns worth a damn?

Mediums need to be good, and other mechs don't need to be worse.

How about we treat it with some common sense, that is use the medium mechs as the actual MEDIUM, the golden standard the other classes would be balanced against?

Let's assume a given mech class can be described (very roughly, but you should get the idea) by a couple basic traits:

Size
Weaponry
Armour
Speed
Manoeuverability, or handling (cause I'm too lazy to type that first word so many times.)

So for mediums, all these stats would be a relative "1" - of course, different kinds of chassis or different variants could have it adjusted to their design dogma.

For lights, compared to the golden medium, it'd roughly be something like -size, -weapons, -armour, +speed, ++handling.

For heavies, we'd have +size, =weapons, +armour, -speed, -handling.

And assaults would have something along the lines of ++size, +weapons, ++armour, --speed, -handling.

Again, the above are just rough suggestions, subject to local variations depending on the mech in question, and by no means would I think it'd be as simplistic. But I hope you get the idea I'm trying to convey.

tl;dr - how bout making mediums the true "golden medium" and balancing other weights against it?
