I worked with a BJ-1, BJ-1DC and a BJ-1X when I was playing them regularly, the 1X can get pretty fast but it has a worse torso twist radius than the others so I ended up settling with the BJ-1 model.

Its extremely good at sniping, for the longest time I used 2 ERppcs, 225 standard engine and max jump jets, binding one ppc to each mouse button allowed me to fire around irregular terrain and buildings and make myself a very difficult target on maps like river city, though I was playing around with a 2LL/2ML/2MG setup last night that did remarkably well.

Its worth noting however that the blackjacks NEED to be fully elited up to really perform respectably, the 2xBasic boost is incredibly important and alongside jump jets makes the BJ-1 quite nimble though I never had any issues fighting lights prior to that thanks to the jumpjet spin combined with precision damage of ppcs.

When I was playing around with the 1DC I tried using a Gauss rifle, AC20 or UAC5 and I found the UAC5 was the best all around for me, though I found that as long as you guarded your big gun like a starving hobo the gauss/ac choices wernt terrible either, but the UAC5 offers more flexibility and space for backup lasers. (Though UAC5 also used to look epic, now its just a fancy mgun on the blackjack :D )

For the BJ 1 i like XL235, ac20 (5 tons ammo), 3 small lasers and either, 3 JJs or AMS with 1 ton ammo. If you want more range with the lasers then lose the JJ/AMS and fit 3 mediums. Decent (jump) brawler, although you need to be good at evading incoming fire. A mini Wang if you will, that can jump, albeit more fragile.

The 1x i have kitted with 2 med/6 small pulse and a honking XL 295 (with 19 DHS to keep it moderately cool). Have to be patient with it, let the fight develop then make strafing runs in and out.

I made the mistake of getting the BJ-3 as my third varient (thought the twist and jets would be better than the 1DC) but could not find a build that worked for me. Too slow to be a laser platform like the 1x, not enough punch with large lasers. In the end i cheesed out and fitted a small engine (think it was a xl195) and 3 PPCs to get me through the basics...

The Bj-3 is really fun with an account xl235 and 6mplas. The rest is all for heat management and at least once jump jet.

You can only fire two alphas before you have to evade and cool down, but 6 mplas do 36 dmg alphas. With precise aim and good evasion during cool down time, this build can do silly things. Test your fire discipline.

I love the 1X, the rest of them can go die in a fire.
1X
It's amazing what you can do with almost 117kph speed, 18DHS, and 8MLs

I agree. The BJ-1X is pound for pound the best mech in the game. I used a similar build but I took out the AMS + ammo and a few DHS to install 8 MPLs. It runs really hot with an alpha putting it at 60-70% heat but it is a 48 point alpha. If my enemy survived the alpha I fire a few chainfired MPLs and then let it cool down a bit or use a coolant flush. Great light hunter as it can leg them with an alpha. Great harasser as it is fast to flank and strike from cover. One of your friends engaged in a brawl? Run up to his opponent and 48 point alpha him. LRM boats got your team down? Sneak behind them and 48 point alpha the torsi of your choosing. 45 ton mech and a 48 point alpha. No other mech can do that. Best roles are as a light hunter, flanker, striker, and harasser.

Support mech in this game means a mech that can't do anything else.
