Yes, I realize it was mounted on one mech only. But, I think this would be a viable weapon to mount on a mech as artillery. On top of it all, this is actually a weapon that is in production currently! *waits for shock and dismay that someone asked about a weapon that is both viable and in production*
The Sniper Rifle Artillery piece is the smaller cousin to the Long Tom Artillery Piece designed by Armstrong Industries. As the second most-powerful tube artillery in the Inner Sphere, the Sniper can cripple or destroy most light and medium BattleMechs with a single hit.[3] The weapon has an effective range of 9 kilometers.[4] While usable as field artillery, the Sniper is also mounted on several vehicles: the Marksman, Padilla Artillery Tank, Sniper Artillery Tank, and Teppō. It was also mounted on the BattleMech Helepolis, though the 'Mech proved ineffective as an artillery mount.

As long as they implement it in such a way it doesn't break the game then why not.(ie. pretty much an automatic hit)

Topicalready discussed - it's pretty much only useful for taking out fixed emplacements or "turtles" as mechs will be almost impossible to hit if moving. It also is not effective as a direct fire weapon and I believe it has a minimum range.

Also, along Nik Van Rhijn's line of thought, the command tree is supposed to already have arty that can be called in from well back of the line. The Long Tom cannon has an impressive maximum range, but also a rather ludicrous minimum range! The d***** thing can't be fired under two MAPS away, let alone two hexes (it's maximum range is 30 maps), and I suspect that most firefights will take place at rather close range (based on the posted videos and screenshots). Sure, the Long Tom is cool for bragging rights ("looky, mine's bigger than YOURS is!"), but how PRACTICAL is that big a weapon? It's so large and heavy, it'd be the ONLY weapon most mechs could mount! Plus, the devs would have to re-adjust the critical system to account for the fact that the Long Tom takes up a massive 30 crits, and HAS to be mounted in several locations on the mech.

This ( Artillery ) have already been discussed to death. Pretty unlike it will happen. The commander role has artillery like functions.
