You may remember I got this computer last year

Dell XPS core i5 (3ghz), 6g ram and added a Radeon 6750.

I'm getting about 18 fps currently with it (used to be in the low 20s but several of the patches have brought it down.

I'm looking at what I would need to do to get up to the mid to high 20s and stay there.

I know I'll likely have to swap power supplies as well to swapping the GPU.

Any advice?

You should be doing a little better than that, but still, a 6750 is not a terribly powerful GPU.

Does your fps vary if you vary in-game settings between low and medium? That will reveal whether it's a CPU or GPU bottleneck.

Also, we need to know what PSU you're running (model, not just claimed wattage) before we can advise you there.

short of pulling it apart, which I can't do right now, here is the specs for the computer from PC world. http://www.pcworld.c...er-desktop.html

As said, I swapped the GPU, otherwise its all stock.

@ 1280x720 Fullscreen, Motion Blur Off,

High FPS 10-19, avg 16 Caustic

Medium FPS 16-26, avg 22 Canyon

Low FPS 24-38 avg 30 Canyon

So if I run on Low, I'm where I'd like to be.

A Nvidia 650ti should serve u well. Its cheap and has enough performance if ur on a budget..

Becouse your running a prebuilt rig its likely the PSu is a cheap one, so i would not recommend pushing it to the max. Find out how much wattage your pulling at load.

The 650ti is only about 30 or so watts more than the 6750 so u 'should' be ok.

Huh. Yep, that's a GPU bottleneck all the way.

That page won't give a PSU model, but since it's a prebuilt machine, it's basically guaranteed that the PSU is crap, so plan on buying another. Newegg regularly carries the Corsair CX430 for $50 with a $20 MiR; I suggest you take advantage of that.

Then it's just a matter of how much budget you have left over for a GPU, and how long a GPU that case of yours will fit.

hi you may like to bump up the PSU power abit more

Geforce GPU even like the GTX660 do suck tons of power at full load

reports it need up to 300W!!! running Futuremark tests

You may as well buy a bigger tower and just have basically a custom build at this point.

They are saying 450w minimum and this is a 150w upgrade over the stock 450 unit. It all arrives tomorrow so I should know for sure in short order. :)

hope u know about rail voltage on psu

i always pick up used graphics cards for around 50 bucks....just got a gtx460 last month...very happy
just in time for summer....had a radeon 4870...ran hot as hell...good results on it though...other than having to buy a new psu for the 4870

i check passmark and write down the numbers...benchmark/dollars

edit: no clue if i was any help...i get around 35fps on my 460 2gb...but i have my tv hooked up and watch avi/mp4/mkv on it while i play

forgot to mention i noticed no real benefit of ati over nvidia or whatever

i've read posts about this game being cpu heavy...so not sure how much gain u will get...they need to optimize this and use dx11

hope i dont sound like im talking down to you...but a good defragmentation for your harddrive works wonders....also try the free program ccleaner and do a registry cleanup

watch during pre-installation...might have some garbage toolbar you should uncheck

i just got a evga 660ti super clocked and love it.. it does require a lot of power
but i have a 700wt power supply, oh and the card runs on the hot side..

nvidia 650 is not a bad card either ..nor is the 550ti...

check link to gforce on performance

installed today, no issues other than the cooling fan is too big (it wasn't need though). PSU is super quiet, and the GPU is giving 60+ FPS on very high settings.

I am seeing an occasional flick where it seems to skip a couple frames. similar to the teleporting I've seen some have when lagging.

your lucky your PSU fit into the tower, it's been my experience that name brand PC's love to use proprietary hardware especially PSU's.

congrats on the upgrade, post up some number for us techno geeks ;)

Ok, first off, your Dell has a 460w PSU...which in all likelyhood is a FSP model so it's more like a 420 under load with some spare headroom for amperage spikes.

I don't know what your budget is for the GPU, but I'd recommend upping the PSU if you go GTX660 or above. While yours will do a 660...under heavy load once PGI throws 12v12 at us...it might fall short when the card needs it most.

The GTX660 is an ok card, not the greatest, but ok. Without knowing your budget it's hard to recommend anything really.
I do know the GTX650ti 2g models and up can handle the game in the framerates you are seeking fairly well at that resolution, and I installed one on an AMD A10 quad machine with 8gigs of ram and it did fine on medium(custom sliders) specs at 1080p. I was surprised how playable it was playing MWO, this wasn't this machines primary focus.

If you have room in the budget, especially after knowing a PSU upgrade might be necessary...I'd highly recommend the new GTX 760. It's the best bang for buck on the market right now even with the AMD cards dropping in price like flies. The power curve under load is better than anything else you can stack against it, and should provide solid performance. The GTX650ti should however get you back in the game solidly with a 720p monitor.

Good luck!

Luckily, it's not an Alienware, just a stock Dell or he would have had that problem.

I bought a tower cooling fan to replace the original but bought the wrong size.

Hench, I upped the PSU to a 600w Cool Master just in case.hopefully that should be enough.

One thing I've noticed is since installing, All my video refresh rates are slow. I'm not sure of the source of the issue though. I occasionally see a teleport in game. When I come out of game, it can take 15 seconds for the mechlab to update and the launch button to go green. Even on net pages it seems to take a few extra seconds. Also see more "sesssion lost" so it could be the game.

Not sure if this in an issue with my internet connection, or the card, or the memory (I have 6g installed, plus the 2g on the card.) Is there an online test I can run to see where the issue is?

As far as numbers, I'll post some shortly. I can tell you that on very high setting, I'm getting a fairly consistent 50-60fps and if things are standing still, 125+.
