Team Ranking, I Don't Think It Will Do What Someone Says It Will Do

Since someone made a poll-only post that doesn't allow any commentary I decided to put it here:

1. The majority of players will always think they are better than they are. They can see their own K/D and W/L ratios today, and they are not stupid...most of them...most of us. Hanging a rank on someone, in a team game where 7 other people contribute to your rank, won't change this.

2. If your competitive guild/corp can't figure out who is where regarding skill levels, that seems to be an internal issue. You still have K/D, L/W, map, mech, and weapon stats...should not take rocket science to turn that into an in-guild evaluation system. Hanging a rank on someone, in a team game where 7 other people contribute to your rank, won't change this.

3. The matchmaking system puts people where it puts people, if you are intent on only facing teams with "better" players than you and ranking is made visible to enable this, do you then just DC when you drop into a match that doesn't give this to you? Hanging a rank on someone, in a team game where 7 other people contribute to your rank, won't change this.

4. Anyone who thinks that public ranks will kill the "you suck!" "no, you suck!" chatter on matches is indulging in wishful thinking. In fact, it will actively encourage the "pro" contingent to tell people of lower ranks to ****. Hanging a rank on someone, in a team game where 7 other people contribute to your rank, won't change this.

What you say is basically correct....but why not have a ranking system. The ELO system is "live" so a basis for a ranking system exists already but is hidden for no good reason other than they can hide it.
Ranking is but another piece of the puzzle when looking at the "value" someone can bring to your team. On its own it means very little but when added to the many other factors you mention in your post plus more, it can be an additional evaluation item to look at.

Having a ranking system is no different to many other team based/ squad based games (where you do rely on your teammates to help you rank up) and it has never been the ONLY indicator of how "good" a person is.

I am all for a ranking system as it IS another thing you can look at to guage the strength of an individual and for some it will be a goal or reason to "hang around" and improve e-peen status if that is why they play.

Everyone has different motivations to play this game/games in general and for some ranking is a missing element, regardless of any flaws in what it actually shows.
