It's been around since the beginning of the matchmaker. If you drop in heavier mechs, you will typically face off against heavier enemy forces, and dropping in lighter mechs will face off against lighter enemy forces.

While this isn't always 100% the case, it's fairly common. When I am in my Awesome or Stalker, I would say that 8 out of 10 matches results in both teams having greater than 500 tons total. The remaining 2 are somewhere between 350-500. That is flip-flopped when I am running my Raven or Jenner.

In my Heavies and Mediums though, most matches are pretty much balanced. Somewhere between 350-550 tons for pretty much every drop.

One of the primary reasons I've been dropping in my Centurion more and more lately (Aside from it being a fun diversion from my Phract)...

As you alluded to for some reason (I'm sure it's Elo intentional) dropping with a Heavy and even more-so Mediums, routinely nets a more balanced / manageable drop weight, making matches more enjoyable IMHO.

I started playing my Spider5D just before missiles got their latest buff/nerf (I was not playing whilst missiles had superbugged splash and ssrms apparently 1shotted people, just to give you some sort of time frame). Before this I had not played a single Spider5D since the new stat page (showing individual mech stats, so this is all whilst the latest Elo system has been in). I have pretty much solo or duo dropped for 80-90% of my games with the occasional 8man or 4man thrown in their and after 450 games my w/l ratio is at 4. So I should by steadily raising my Elo score which was based on very positive w/l for my Jenners (although I have played them before the Elo revamp they did so not as accurate even if more games). I still end up in groups with 3+ light mechs on my team surprisingly often, although usually it is a safe bet for me to say my team will be lighter then the enemy team almost every game. So I do not know if any of this means anything but I thought I would let you know what my experience from the opposite side has been! :D
