Hey,

so far I have only played with Awesome 9M for now with XL engine.
Now I want to buy a new Mech with more survivability and Gaus or AC/20 but i cant decide between Atlas or Misery

The Atlas seems more versatile and has more Armor. Misery should be a bit faster and i would like the +30% CBills.

So how would you decide and why ?Anyone knoe if the extra Armor of an Atlas is noticeable against a Stalker ?

Personally I prefer my Misery over an atlas for two reason you've already pointed out,

1. Its giving me the 30% c-bill bonus which makes farming a little bit less of a chore time wise.
2. With my Miserys' current load out im doing 58.7k (without speed bonus) which certainly helps when you'd rather get in close to the action or for taking cover from snipers and missiles.

I spose the biggest downside is the Misery can only be purchased with MC as well as not taking as much punishment as the Atlas can, but if you dont see that as being much of a problem I'd probably recommend Misery first since if you end up not liking it it wont take you as long to farm the CBills to get yourself an Atlas.

I feel very uncomfortable in a Stalker and prefer the Atlas because of it´s Arms (to shield).

C-bills are no issue imho.

Why no Highlander?
You have a Hero and the HGN-733C can carry 2 UAC/5 or an AC/20 in it´s arm.

If you're willing to shell out for the Hero 'mech, by all means do so. The 30% c-bill boost is a good thing, and will make grinding for your next chassis much easier.

However, the choice between chassis comes down to how you want to use the 'Mech. The Atlas makes a rather poor sniper, while the Stalker excels in that role. There are two main reasons for this:

First, because of the way engine tonnages increase, a lighter 'Mech can carry a larger % of its weight as weaponry - this is why it's better to kill a Stalker before an Atlas if you have the choice (all else being equal, of course.) Additionally, the Stalker has more weapon hardpoints in more locations than an Atlas.

Second, the Stalker's weapon hardpoints are higher than those of the Atlas. You can be looking over the top of an obstacle by a fair margin, and your weapons (particularly your arms) will still be blocked by the terrain - Stalkers, because of their high-slung "arms," don't have this problem.

Truthfully if you are looking for an assault mech with a gauss build the highlander is really your best option. I have played with gauss in all 3 of them and I (personally) really dislike having a gauss in the side torso as it turns into a death sentence if you aren't very careful.

I know it isn't really on your list but I would take a good look at the Heavy Metal if gauss is your thing and you want to run an assault. CBill bonus like the misery but with the advantage of jump jets and arm mounted ballistics.

Highlander jumpsniper might be cheesy but it's very effective.

Had played the HGN-732 Trial Mech some time and like the Gauss but arm mounted it feels a bit uncomfortable because you need free room to shoot. But the JJ are realy nice to use to get the room to fire. I will think abt HM too.

I would wait until the first of the month patch. One of the existing mechs is supposed to get a hero mech. This means Atlas, Jenner, Raven, Spider, Catapult, Hunchback, Trebuchet. Unless I missed one all the others have heroes. They know the Atlas will sell big bucks, so it's very likely the next hero mech. There's a Royal Guard model mentioned on Sarna as well as the Atlas Mark II -- both are similar to standard Atlas but with slight enough differences to become hero mechs for a regular Atlas. These would make sense. Otherwise they will make their own variant, which will be a specific hero's (which none of them were unique in terms of weaponry) or they will make up one. I'm venturing closer to royal guard or mark II.

Both Misery and Atlas mechs should always run standard engines. When a Misery has a Gauss and 4 PPCs, it's got an XL, and will die in 2 small lasers once you take out the side torso armor on the gauss side.

I'm going to let you decide. In these videos is your own reasoning. The first is purely default. The second is 'almost' default with weaker weapons.

This was a default Misery. First time running it. No unlocks. From my perspective.

And this is an underpowered Atlas, running AC/2, AC/5, LRM 10, SRM 6, 4 medium lasers (so aside from the larger engine and weaker auto cannons with DHS, it is a default Atlas D. Btw, since I never ran the other models this is still in the Basic tree.) If you want the action skip to 1:30. In the end I wind up with 6 kills and a vicious beating.
This video is from the perspective of a camera commando watching me.

Both of them are piloted by me.

On hindsight, I wish I had good footage of my Heavy Metal; I'm gonna have to record more. Most of what I have is the default rig where it keeps getting its rear kicked. Lately I have an XL 330 engine... actually let's do it this way.

Spoiler

I began using it to take out 6 PPC stalkers and LRM boats before the patches. Don't think I'll ever change the build again.

Thanks Koniving for the input.
As I am on vacation for one week at the end of the month, I will wait for the next update and hope its the Atlas Hero Mech.

If not, I would go with normal Atlas I guess or HM .... or Misery ;)

I wouldn't hold your breath for an atlas hero. PGI has said that they want to keep the founder's mechs special for now, so Atlas, Catapult, Hunchback, and Jenner probably won't be getting hero mechs anytime soon.

Two great resources:

TankBoyKen's article on themittani.com explaining the value of the Misery.

And my tier list of course! ;)

The Atlas is probably the all-around best choice (if for no other reason than it doesn't cost real world money), but Misery is still an extremely dangerous mech, packing firepower similar to an Atlas on an 85-ton frame. While it has less armor, it is also a smaller target and, because it looks at first glance like any other Stalker, has somewhat of an ability to blend into the background before unleashing AC20's or Gauss rounds on unprepared foes.

How dare you suggest "any other Stalker" blends in with the background! :D

It's been said to death, but I'll through my acutator wrench into the discussion.

Misery: C-bill bonus, might want to put a big engine on it so you can waddle faster and move around, being a stationary target is just begging for death. Also, stay away from Gauss. It's a gigantic bomb strapped to your torso, when it goes critical, it does quite a bit of damage. Stick with A/Cs. Or, there's the ever popular stripping of the A/C and just going beam weps. Improves heat efficiency. Summation: I like guns. Narrow profile, difficult to turn and give the stink eye to attacking lights.

Atlas: Actually has the armor I believe to run a gauss and survive the detonation of said gauss. But here's the thing, now since the Atlas has been around, the right side torso ballistic slot most of the time is the 1st thing to go on an Atlas. Sometime's I fire for the center and hit the right side and I'm like meh, cool. Also, the Atlas is one of the higher armor boating design (For now), and if you enjoy swimming through laser fire, and decimating foes, the Atlas will be your friend. Summation: I like Heavy armor. I wish to survive. Wide profile, wait, *torso twist* who shot me? Fewer weps.

As a beginner I would advise to stay away from the Highlanders for now because of their terrible turning radius and poor rear armor.

Personally I would say atlas unless converting real money into cbills (IE 30% bonus to cbills gain) is a important thing for you, iv fought alongside and against many misery pilots and for the most part they have never seemed that impressive so I get the distinct feeling that either the mech is lackluster for a stalker or requires a better pilot to shine.
