Everytime I jump on my Cata with a Gauss in the torso I have the same scenerio happen. I am at max range, using cover, full armor, max zoomed in, take a shot, get hit ONCE or TWICE in the CT and suddenly I have a 70 ton set of legs with ONE medium laser since the explosion takes out both my main weapon and my entire right arm which is packing an ER PPC. I even put a CASE under the Gauss even though there is no ammo in the CT to see if that would make a difference but nope it happens time after time. Who in their right mind would make a weapon that is nothing but a time bomb waiting to explode in their face?

Am I the only one this is happening to?

that's your tradeoff for using a no heat, high damage, high range weapon. think glass cannon.

Are you sure your armor is maxed? What's your front/back allocation look like? Unless you are taking hits from multiple weapons inside of their optimal range, you should be able to withstand 2 salvos. Also, don't peek-a-boo out of the same spot more than twice, the third time will get you nailed hard. Hell, sometimes the second is pushing it.

I prefer to run the Gauss on anything fast or with a smaller area to hit it, because yeah....it blows up easily.

My little Hollander spider mech seems to do the trick, but that's because 80 km/hr with a small target to take out the gun arm

Solution: put the Gauss Rifle in your arm, and the ERPPC in the torso.
Suddenly you only lose an arm, and more likely your Gauss never blows up at all.

Gauss does 3/4 of the dmg of an AC/20, carries more ammo, has more range, produces significantly less heat, is smaller, and it's ammo does not explode.

For all of those benefits you get a 20pt explosion when it gets crit out, at which point your armor has already been breached and you're probably close to dead anyway.

Also pack your ammo with the gauss so it takes the crit instead.

If its a 3D you want to do something like the above, put the gauss in the arm and the PPC's in the torso, then use the non-explosive gauss ammo as crit pads for the extremely explosive gauss. And remember to use your spare arm as a shield.

2x you don't have a choice as your one ballistic slot is in the torso, in that case your better off with an ac10 instead.

if you use a gauss, need to make sure your armor is maxed out, and always load the ammo with it for obvious reasons. if you have jumpjets on your mech never poptart (straight up and down) twist your torso and move laterally when you hit the jets that should help a lot!

install ammo in with the gun and also if your using XL Engines pack the CT-and overflow with ammo too, it wil help soak any dmg done to you.

Was just about to post the same.

XL310, JJ's, RA Gauss, 3T ammo, 2 ERPPC's L/R torso.
79kph with JJ's and a 35 Alpha Strike. If the Guass gets blown off you still have the PPC's.

My Cataphract is (generally) CT cored before the Gauss explodes.

But I don't drop with Gauss all that often, so my "sample size" is small :P

In my experience, torso mounted gauss rifles don't last long at all. For this reason, I always mount them in the arm if possible. PPCs go in the torsos.

and with the PPC's in the torsos you're firing from a much higher point on the chassis.
On the arms you're basically shooting from the hip.

Unless you've got jump jets. Then you can fire from wherever you like.

I have MAXED out the armor, meaning I cant add any more and I also have Ferrous Fiber armor.

Not possible the Arm is Energy only, the CT is the only Ballistic Slot

Looks like I need to dump some more CBills into another Chassie.
