Are there any (viable) mech builds for which taking standard heats would be preferable to taking double heat sinks? If so, what are some examples of this? I cannot think of any reason offhand to not immediately purchase double heat sinks for any mech.

I can think of one. Gaussapult.

You pretty much can't overheat anyhow, so why blow the 1.5 million, unless you are just bored. Some of the tryhards will say DHS will make it better, but can't overheat is can't overheat. And if I get teh same result for 1.5 mil less, than THAT version is better.

I seem to recall there being one or two very specific and not really very good assault builds that end up marginally better with SHS than DHS because of critslot vs tonnage shenanigans. Can't remember the details though, and they were mostly thought experiments IIRC, not viable builds.

Com2d cookie cutter build. 210 engine so it requires 2 external heat sinks. With DHS, it can't afford the 6 slots that would take. That's the only build I can think of that's objectively better without DHS. There are a few builds where it doesn't matter (really low heat builds as per Bishop above) but they aren't hurt by DHS and you may as well get it unless you're one of those freaks who sets up a build and never changes it, because you'll need DHS for anything else.

There are some DDC builds that aren't hurt by taking singles. Of course, they aren't helped either.

Commando-2D with ECM, 3xSSRM + 2 tons ammo, mlas, endo, FF and a 200XL. This thing is a serious threat to Jenners, Spiders and Ravens. You absolutely need 2x basics though, but I believe it to be one of the best Commando builds. The 200XL is a versatile engine, unlike the specialty 195XL which would allow DHS on the Streakmando. I stick the external heatsinks in the legs as supposedly they run as doubles while in water.

AC20 Raven

Because I'm not sticking around long enough to overheat and die and an extra half ton of armor/speed is way more valuable.

Last time I was mucking about wih my 4SP laserboat I seemed to recall that it was better to keep singles as it gave you better efficiency what with all the lasers taking up the torso slot. That was months ago though, when dhs first came out, will have to confirm that again.
