Hrm...so I could set my computer up to farm bitcoins to buy stuff on the internet that I could just buy with my credit card and lose the purchase protection that my credit card gives me, or I could use my spare computing power for a worthwhile project like SETI@Home or Solitaire and just keep buying stuff with my credit card?

[dripping sarcasm]Tough choice there...[/dripping sarcasm]

Don't forget the part where you spend $150 worth of Bitcoins to purchase a $20 Steam Game from those 3rd party vendors!

I've known quite a few miners, and its so amusing to watch them try and get stuff for "free" while they spend their (parents) electricity and try to get stuff with it.

Close thread is in order I think.

Typically, mining bitcoins isn't worth the cost of electricity generated by the act of mining itself (literally, your electric bill might go up $5, but you might only find $1-$2 of Bitcoins).

Say that you have one AMD Radeon HD7950. If you would leave it to mine for 24h it would cost you about $0.60 in electricity at 0.12 USD/kWh. Meanwhile you would make about $2.60 worth of bitcoins, that you could sell immediately if you have no confidence in the current exchange rate. So if you would only play in the weekends, you could buy MC for about $10 per week for free.

Yes, those are two perfectly valid options. You are free to do what you want.

Look, it's obvious. We're not dealing with a troll, we're dealing with someone who invested in bitcoins and wants to see their investment increase in value. The more places that accept the commodity, the higher its perceived value, and the market value might start going up to match.

I wish that was true, but I entered the game way too late to be holding anything of value. Since I cannot make even a small fortune from this, I just use them for micro transaction like I described earlier, buying/selling games etc. My motivation is to make this easier, and to help PGI make this game into a financial success so that we can still enjoy MWO years from now.

But I am not here to discuss my motivations, but rather the implementation of this idea. Between all the troll stomping there was one criticism about farming that I found interesting, though that poster could not follow up with how that would actually manifest. Other than that the naysayers pretty just said "It is stupid", which we will never understand why it is unless they explain their way of thinking. If you do not motivate better you will just be considered part of the troll herd and remain ignored.

Not fear. Convenience. Why do you think Humble Bundle accepts bitcoins? Why do you think there is a 3rd party site that buys Steam games for you if you send them bitcoins? If everybody were happy about selling their coins for local currency, then use a credit card to buy games from Steam, that site would not have any business. But they do, and that proves my point.

So you're basically saying you're too lazy to convert an electronic currency, into a more readily available and more widely accepted currency and because of that, you expect a company to change/adopt policies to cater to your wants.

Pretty much, that is what I have been saying the whole time, but I must have been very unclear since people start talking about socialism, drugs, BioShock and any other random thing that popped into their minds. You say it as if this is not important, but never underestimate the power of indolence as a driving force! :)
For example, there are two movies you want to see tonight, but one of them you can only buy with buy with EUR and the other you can only buy with USD. You have some EUR in your pocket, but not USD. Of course, you could find an exchange office and trade the EUR for USD, but I bet that you would just buy the movie that would take your EUR directly. Do you get me now?

You do know that 60% of all companies, regardless of business, close within 3 years right? (This was from a study based on US Health Department statistics in 2007.) That number you quote thus really means nothing tbh.

Why would one theatre only accept one currency for one movie, but require a totally different currency for a different movie?

OR

Why would two theatres in the same town take two different currencies?

OR

Who sees two movies in a day at two different theatres?

Well, in that case, since I actually want to see BOTH movies, I would see the one that is most convenient at the time. Then, if I still wanted to see the other movie that badly, then yes, I'd go change out some euros for some US dollars so I could see the it, too.

However, here's a better comparison to the current situation:

Suppose you want to see a movie. The theater only takes US dollars and you only have euros in your pocket. So, your choice is to either get the currency changed out to US Dollars, or don't watch the movie.

Same thing with MWO. You want to buy MC and PGI only takes US Dollars, but you only have bitcoins in your pocket. You can either convert the bitcoins to US Dollars so you can buy some MC, or you can just not buy MC.
