Thank you for this thread! I am considering an Atlas (current mechs are Jenner and Centurion) and all the advice I can get is helpful.

I have a few months experience piloting Assaults, and started with the Atlas D - you've been given plenty of good advise here, so I'll just tack on what I can:
1) You're tough, but you're also a huge target: You have more armor and firepower than anything in the game, which is nice, but your enemy knows that, too, and will try to remove you from the game ASAP. So, as with any mech, use cover, stick with your team, and focus fire.
2) You cannot retreat: You're too big and slow to run away from an engagement, so once you commit, you must be able to win the fight. If your glorious charge suddenly reveals every enemy mech over that hill, you're probably dead since you can't just run away like a fast light mech.
3) You will take damage - a lot of it: To pilot an assault, you have to be willing to be pounded by everything on the other side - your armor will be molten and your weapons blasted off. Obviously, you should be blowing the other guy to pieces, but you must accept the fact that once battle begins, you'll be under fire for the whole duration of it. Remember that your huge amount of armor is a resources - spend it all to survive.
Good luck and have fun!
