Hi guys,
I've been playing for about a month now and have tinkered with a bunch of 3D builds as it was the first mech I purchased. I wanted to share my current build for the past few days and get some feedback, anything constructive no matter how small is appreciated!

To give you an idea of what I'm going for: I started out playing a pop-tart ppc build which I found effective, but obviously had limited close-range usefulness. I didn't want to make a pure dps brawler as I have my 4X for that, but wanted something that could engage from a distance while still retaining the punch and toughness to stay in the fight up close.
I usually start off matches by picking as much as possible with my ERLL's, then staying at a med. distance and functioning as fire support with the 48 dmg alphas.
The biggest weakness right now is heat. While not designed to be a pure knife fighter, it still has issues with extended brawls due to overheating after a few alphas. At that point I usually switch to just using my AC20 and if i have the heat cap left, the med lasers on the arms.
Once again, anything suggestions as small as armor/ammo distribution is appreciated!

I beat it up a little and came up with a model somewhat like my ON1-K Ogre : CTF-3D Cataphriction I droped the ERLL to mediums , added a bit of armor to the legs , a extra jump jet, another ton of ammo and two more heatsinks while exchanging the 275 for a 300 standard.
I found that with my orion at least 75+(with speed tweak) was important, im hoping the added jump and more speed in your case will help offset the lack of long range punch.

You can juuust cram in a STD300 engine by sacrificing some cooling and/or laser range. I like the big lazors on the arms for easy tracking at close range, but that depends a lot on preference -- they are not great for sniping when located that low. This build might work better in a simpler version without Medium Lasers, for less heat and more ammo.
The same safe layout can also accomodate 2xPPC+2xLL, which is almost as potent, but also hot. You can make that cooler (but not as robust) by using the XL325.

You can do so much more with the 3D just by keeping the XL or going for a bigger XL. Running an AC20 hits hard but takes up too much space/weight for low damage ability. Remember this: 1 ton of AC20 ammo can put out 140 damage and that is only if you hit people within 270 meters. By going to a smaller caliber weapon, you gain the ability to do 150 damage per ton and it does more damage out to greater distances and the rounds move faster. Contrary to popular belief AC20s are not the best weapons in game and through experience and talking to others have seen an AC10 do more damage than an AC20.
Here is what I would do ( http://mwo.smurfy-ne...1afe0762a9bf842 ) if I were in your shoes being relatively new and wanting the most out of the 3D. First buy a 300XL since it is the most commonly used XL engine that you can have making it worth the price and it gives you speed at 15.5 tons allowing for more equipment. Second drop the ERs for PPCs; they suffer from a min range on 90 meters (no damage under 90meters) and run hotter while not having the range of ERLLs but what makes them so good is that they will unload 10 damage at the time of impact instead of 9 damage over 1 second. This will make it easier to move around and spread damage over your torso, which will let you survive longer (176 points vs. 76 points). The reason to keep the MLs and AC10 is to give you some bite under 90 meters and give you some breathing room when you start to run too hot. I personally would run more JJs but 2 works by allowing you to keep you mobile and allow you to overcome obstacles easily; as a side bonus by jumping in brawls you will most likely be shot in the legs instead of the torso adding to your life also hence why not to stack all your ammo in your legs.
Follow these tips and I bet you that your 3D will do much better in game. Also, feel free to move the PPCs to the torso but then the AC10 has to go in the arm. If you run the arm lock on try to learn to run with it off. It can be tough to get the hang of it but your arms will aim faster and further than with it on. Hope that this helps you out and if you have questions, feel free to ask me anything. Good hunting and good luck.

I was rather pleasantly surprised with this build; it has potential. The biggest drawback is your leg armor is way, way too weak.
Either way, I made some adjustments I might even give a shot: Took the ERs out for standard LLs to reduce the heat, dropped 2 DHS, put in an STD290 and buffed that armor right on up. I think it actually has a lot of potential now, I'll have to give it a test drive later.
