In the context of MW:O...

Tactically this is called "Vulching"... I.E. Hanging back, letting the rest of the team (yours and theirs) take a beating then waltz in and pick off the weak and damaged.

Valid tactic?... absolutely. Socially acceptable?... Not really. This tactic is selfish and self-serving...

That said, in the current meta, particularly in PUG games there is no greater incentive to play for the team and as a result pilots systematically assume the "every man for themselves" mentality...

Hopefully CW will re-emphasize being part of a bigger picture.

Its all about timing. Time your engagement right, you save teammates and get called Cavalry. Time it poorly and let people die and you called Vulture. All about timing.

Fair Point... And can appreciate the potential difference. But in my mind, if the OP comes and vultches my forthcoming personal kill under the guise of being the "heroic calvary to the rescue"... I'm not real happy with the outcome.

Conversely, if the OP rolls in after both sides are severely bloodied and or I'm dead... My first thought is "Where the heck were you (especially if he has zero damage) in the pitch of battle"?

Ultimately it's semantics as the OP clearly was not part of the team effort and his tactics were entirely self-serving.

Letting a Lion maul your friend and once it's gorged and lethargic, sneaking in and subduing the beast just does not give one that warm fuzzy feeling ya know? :)

I've been experimenting lately, and found that camping/staying afk a good 1-2 minutes into a match then waltzing in to clean up has netted me more wins and damage than simply participating from the get to.
I've seen players doing this.

Maybe it was you.

****** me off no end.

This happens every once in a while and I always apologize. In my defense tho, I've gotten more "Savior Bonuses" than I can count, and nobody has ever flat accused me of being a vulture because there's communication involved instead of some nobody showing up out of nowhere to steal a kill.

It was actually hilarious the last I accidently snaked a kill tho, as I had just barely began to fire and machine guns killed the target. I was like "OMG so sorry I totally did not expect MGuns to kill that guy". We both laughed and went onto win the match.

P.S. if I don't get back to your post I'm either busy having fun in game or reporting you for trolling. :)

I'm actually teaching players how to do it in game, and the uptick in wins is very refreshing. The other teams are constatly cussing at eachother because half of their pugs derp around or rush.

There's no better feeling than giving sound advice to players and watching them succeed. As long as this tactic remains viable, the only complaints are coming from the losing side. (and forum grouches) :)

The OP just admitted to avoiding contact initially in order to get easy kills.

While not exactly morally correct from a fair gaming perspective i can live with it as it's a lone example of it.

However.

When the OP admits to teaching this to others, well, I REALLY don't want to jump into a pug match if half the team is going to sit there like a lump while I do all the fighting.

I fail to see this thread being 'constructive' in any form.

LOL! Actually if you see me about to go "daisies up" feel free to vultch in and save my sorry arse. But if you see me chasing down a wounded duck and you cut in front of me to to finish the kill off... you'n me gonna "have words" young buck...

Not sure why you'd report me for trolling but nothing surprises me in this community... :D

If anything, I've noticed I do better when I sit back and take potshots from behind teammates, rather than behind rocks. Then again, I'm running a Blackjack lately and those are long-range damage over time mechs, not in-your-face burst damage mechs.

one more point for you lockwood

Quote

Away From Keyboard Abuse

If a player has joined a match, they must have launched the game with intent to play. Players who are not moving, or are otherwise not participating in the spirit of the game, fall under this category. While we all understand the call of nature: Repeated abuse of this behaviour, similarly to 'Mech Suicide and Team Killing, results in an unfair advantage for the enemy teams, and is thus not considered acceptable use. Please keep in mind that idling on your cap point without armour or moving does not constitute a form of tactical "Base Defense".

http://mwomercs.com/...ploitsgriefing/

so feel free to not participate all you want. but remember this. not only do people who are actually good at participating manage to get multiple kills, do several hundred damage, and maintain >3 win/loss, but they also aren't violating the TOS by throwing their teammates under the bus

It's tempting to lag behind your teammates when you know your mech can move faster than the average speed of the main body and therefore quickly catch up once the action starts, but it's really kind of sucky to do it intentionally. You can roam your team's side of the battlefield while you're waiting for the main body to decide where to go. As long as you don't expose yourself too much, you won't have to worry about snipers/lrms. Additionally, if the enemy spots you wandering while you're detached you'll likely confuse them as to where the main force will push.

Maybe, but you are taking a chance, and without a doubt leaving your team out to dry to pad your own stats.
