I'd love to see PPCs have a more setting-appropriate minimum-range effect. When you shoot a target inside 90m, your damage falls off linearly, just like it is supposed to now. The difference is that the location where you have your PPC mounted takes the difference in damage.

The whole point of the minimum range was that PPCs couldn't focus the bolt properly inside 90m, causing damaging feedback to the firing mech. ERPPCs and PPC Capacitors fixed the issue, removing the minimum range, but stock PPCs ought to hurt you if you fire them inside 90m.

Doing it this way makes it even more of a trade-off to try to use them as brawling weapons, which they ought not to be good at.

While I'd love to see that idea implemented, it's not going to do much to the current game; nobody uses PPCs since they can use ERPPCs instead - and the ERPPC is a much better weapon than the PPC.

Both the PPC and the ERPPC are a little too good, and compared to BT the ERPPC is way better than it was in BT:

BT PPCs were 10 damage for 10 heat.
MWO PPCs are 10 damage for 8 heat
BT ERPPCs were 10 damage for 15 heat
MWO ERPPCs are 10 damage for 11 heat.

So already we can see that BT's 50% heat increase for the ERPPC has become only a 37.5% increase in MWO (not to mention that both weapons generate way too little heat as-is).

Another thing is range; in BT, the ERPPC only had a 16% range increase for long range, and a 27% increase in extreme range - in MWO it has a 50% increase in effective range (long range) and a 50% increase in max range (extreme range).

And of course the ERPPC has no minimum range in either BT or MWO.

So really, it's a no-brainer; there's absolutely no reason to mount a PPC, mount an ERPPC instead.

Yeah I thought the wording in that last patch could have been better.

A minimum range should be a minimum range - under 90m should be zero damage. Otherwise they need to change the text to be minimum range of zero - 90, effective range 90-540 etc.

Saying they fixed it to do "appropriate" damage to me should have meant they fixed the "bug" that was causing them to do any damage under 90m.

It kind of defeats the purpose of the ERPPC and stuffs up the balance mechanics of the PPC, not to mention being non canon etc.

It's always annoyed me that PPC's work under 90m and I hope one day they manage to get it working. I always thought it was a technical limitation - they just couldn't set damage to zero under 90m even when they tried back in CB, so rather than fix it they gave up and just reduced the damage instead.

They seem to NOT drop off linearly over range however

I've had multiple base swap matches where I snipe any enemy with 4PPCs at 800-850 meters

(only shot of entire match)

and get 30-34 damage

whereas if the drop off was linear

I would have 20-22 damage

are you certain they weren't ERs they have no minimum.
They do need to put their heat back to 1.5 of PPCs the real fix for them

I felt so vindicated by this change. I had a gd *dev* tell me that PPC damage drop off was linear when it was in fact a non-linear function both in training grounds and live servers.

Do you need a hug? Some of the devs deserve one. Others... not so much.
