In an effort to bring more diversity to the battlefield, why not limit the available tonnage per team (i.e. 500T per 8-man)?
People could still play whatever mech they want, but heavier mechs might have longer queue times. Light and medium mechs would now no longer be seen as a detriment, because their slot means that a heavy or assault would have the space to be on their team.
Drop Weight Restrictions?

Nice bias in your options.. How about "No; there isn't a problem here that needs to be solved."
They need to improve team balance and similar systems (re-joining from a drop), not tweak the system for some arbitrary mech choices that match a style you like.

Apologies, I was not trying to be biased, just trying to keep it light-hearted.
The suggestion is meant as a way to solve the perceived problem of too many assaults on the battlefield, and giving people an actual reason to choose to pilot lights and mediums.
I never stated what style "I like". I have not even voted in the poll.
Try not to read too much into my statements.

i'd enjoy a tonnage limit - i'm sick of playing a medium or heavy and encountering a team with 3-4 assaults, while only 2 are on the own team...

I also agree to adding weight restrictions to each team of battlemechs in this thread.

You realize you are contridciting yourself when you say "team balance" right? The point of Weight limits per team is for Team Balance...so that matches where all assualt mechs versus Lgiht/medium mechs would not happen, instead a team of equally balanced battlemech configurations. What would be your solution for team balance, how can you add to this discussion for this thread? In addition, there is option to select in the vote "No, I want my 800 ton Steiner scout lance!" that you can also vote for.
I can understand the fun in having a battle with all mechs of one weight class, BUT they're are many people in this game that also do like many different mech classes and the many tactics they bring. Satisfying both parties, as long it can be enabled/disabled for everyone per battle, leads to MWO develoeprs getting a broader range of players and increase money income for people to buy stuff. A extreme example of this is with most of the communities (including myself) against 3rd person, instead PGI made a global OPTION for it to be disabled in battles and only for matches that every MW has it enabled. PGI was smart in that way of not forcing 3rd onto players that do not want it. For example it can be turned off for everyone in a match using the UI, prior to a battle. The same way PGI can have a option to limit tonnage per battle...
I do admit there needs to be some penalties for continual disconnects (like 4 disconnects in a row, leads to 30 mins of the selected mech being unavailable) and disconnect to rejoin option. This would come with some cavets, if the player rejoins then disconnects again it counts as a disconnect. If this happens 3 more times, penalties would kick in as the selected mech would be locked out for 30 mins. That is more of a technicle/farm bot problem though, when the game gets stable (nearly out of beta) the community stilll will be discussing this. When the game gets stable this will still be a relevent discussion to most of the community.

if you want to add a weight limit, do it this way
mode dropship deathmatch.
each player on team can choose up to 4 mecks to bring to the battle, with say a weight limit of 220 tons per player.
so if you want to run a range of mecks you can bring all 4 but if you only run assaults you are limited to 2 and possible a light/medium. you choose beforehand in which order you will play the mecks when you die you return to dropship and start in next Meck. make the drop ship destructible/ capturable ( sliding scale of Hit points depending on how many kills each side have scored)
If a meck spends more than 2 mins powered down it kicks player back to dropship as if killed.

Yeah i could see this working with a 500T weight limit.
2 x 6ppc stalker 170T
4 x AC40 jagers 260T
2 x lights with streaks/ecm 70T
Total = 500T
I think we need more than a tonnage limit to create diversity.
