Is there a benefit to using FF other than the weight savings? I thought I remembered that FF provided slightly better protection also, but its been a while since I looked it up.

So FF saves weight at the cost of slots. Any other differences?

Ferro-Fibrous is an interesting upgrade, by the rules it provides 12% more armour points per ton.

So you could take the same weight in armour, and gain 12% more protection.
Or you could take the same amount of armour points, and free up some weight.

Edit: it's still the least benificial upgrade to save weight though. I recommend only getting it if you have all the other upgrades but still have the critical slots left.

In MWO, you don't get extra protection. You get the same protection for less weight. Generally speaking, you don't want to take FF before you have taken Endo. Other than lights, only a few chassis can really benefit from it at all.

In MWO it works the same way as in TT, which is to say it's strictly worse than Endosteel.
In TT it's also more expensive than Endo and carries a higher repair cost. FF is easier to fit onto an existing mech as it's only saving grace.

Bottom line: If you ever feel like putting FF on, use Endo instead. Only use FF when you already are using Endo.

If you need more armor protection, but are out of tonnage - an upgrade to FF (if you have the criticals for it) can provide an increase in armor protection.... provided you haven't maxed out your armor points, already.

None.

What you might be thinking of are some of the special armors. There were ballistic reactive armors, hardened armors, laser reflective armors, and some others.

Those could open up some interesting possibilities in MWO - but they would all be out of our timeline.

Generally speaking, ferro fibrous is only worth it on light mechs, as they are the only ones that have the free criticals to take advantage of it.

Some mediums can handle it - but you're often better saving the criticals for double heat sinks.

Things change a bit with Clan systems... but the Clans are roflstomp incarnate.

Without RnR the only downside to FF is having the crit space to fit it.
