MWO is detecting my flight pedals as a joystick, which has screwed up all my controls and rendered the game unplayable. Is there a way to clear control setups, because esc./repeating the control does nothing.

MWO client go to menu>options and reset to default. You will need to reset everything you had set before as well as any control bindings. Be sure when you bind your pedals, you use the entry labeled 'analog turning' towards the *bottom of the controls list, third column.

This does not clear the joystick controls.

First start client with no controls plugged in, then reset it to default. At that point, there will be entries with that look like this: 'Joy 1 Button 11' or 'Joy 0 Axis X' in some of the cells in the joystick column which is normal. Save>exit>stop client, plug in pedals, restart client and *then bind them to the analog tuning by double clicking the appropriate cell (Analog Turn) in the column with joystick entries wiggle the axis while it's flashing green to bind and click yes to remapping that control and save your settings when you exit.
If that doesn't work, you should run the client repair tool or maybe reinstall MWO and try again. Failing all that, if you find yourself posting here again list your pedals and other hardware (including computer).

What used to work for clearing joystick controls...
1. Exit MWO
2. Backup your copy of the actionmaps.xml file to a safe location.
3. Delete actionmaps.xml
4. With your joystick controller(s) unplugged, restart MWO. It should re-create a clean copy of the actionmaps.xml, with no joystick bindings.
The repair tool is worth a try after that if the steps above don't get you there.
