Allow mechs to be published by a web service interface in an XML format. This xml could then be delivered to third party sites such as fan sites or 3rd party mech build sites. Additionally, you could create an MWO player and mech search area to view the players mech variants that they have created much like World of Warcraft does with its armory using the same web service interface.
Sharing builds right now is a series of screenshots or a third party tool that does not perfectly match mech lab logic. The player community would develop good tools from this.
It would be a good marketing tool if other sites could integrate with this and would standardize the third party views of mechs. You could include link back to your site or marketing material as part of the integration agreement.
I'm not suggesting this take priority over anything in beta.

First question, how would I keep my mech build protected such that some random person could not request the data.
Second, if you want your mechs in an XML format, I would suggest http://remlab.sourceforge.net/. It has some interesting features but can export your mech to an XML format which you could then upload to your forum website or whatnot. Also, the source is downloadable and able to be customized so you could make it fit MWO specs if you have the knowledge or desire. Also, hosting is pretty cheap so you could run the website yourself if you wanted.
At any rate, would this meet your needs?

Valve solved this issue by allowing players an option to "Make their backpack private". We would have a "Make my Mech Garage private" which would prevent players from polling the configs from a public service.

I would like to see a web service that returns the online status of a player or list of players. This would allow people who are setting up guilds to have a site that shows all of the online players in your guild. This also could be returned in XML.
