how do I get the fps to show up during game?

In the meantime you can download a free program to do this, like FRAPS or my personal favorite MSI Afterburner.

Either will allow you to view framerates for all your games, but Afterburner has a ton of other capabilities (such as GPU monitoring and overclocking, video cap, and screen cap among others).
