I don't really know how to say this, but when you're in the mechlab and say you have a Hunchback, if you take out the AC20, will the huge structure also disappear? SO changing parts in the mech... will it also alter the appearance? Will loading it with lasers get rid of gun tubes?

No. IIRC, the devs have said that there will be different numbers of lenses when you change the number of lasers in a location, for example, but don't expect any huge difference (like removing that huge case or changing an arm's entire structure).

that's all I wanted to know. would be silly if you have three lasers and they all shoot out of the same autocannon looking orifice

yes...won't it be awesome when you roll up on someone thinking they have machine gun cluster and *POW* you get hammered by a gauss rifle... ninja'd...

Wait-wait-wait....
As we saw from MechLab videosit DOES actually change the look of your mech when you change armament. Hands on that Hunchback did actually change when he swapped lasers. What they said is "if the only part of, say, laser that is visible is a lense, then it will look the same for all the sizes."
Also PPC and LRM20's on the Catapult also change the looks of your mech.
Considering Hunchie I bet it has one Autocannon hardpoint in his right torso, so that bulk is not going anywhere. You can load ammo in there, or install a smaller size AC, but it won't change the base structure of your mech.

So, answering OP's question: changing your armament does affect your mech's appearence to some extent.
