So, not a complaint, just an amusing observation I've found. I like to dive into games and analyze the information in them, it's an old habit from playing P&P games and is usually referred to as mathematical theorycrafting. Of course, these observations are across only 50 or so matches of both types (Over the last week), and real statistics would be much more relvealing. Regardless, clear observations are easy, simply by knowing what your team is fielding and what happens to them.

When selecting assault or conquest as the mission type, the resulting teams vary signifigantly. While this is obvious any time you play a mission, playing the same type over and over reveals patterns.

When playing only Assault mode, the teams are signifigantly heavier, often with 3-5 assaults and the rest randomly split between heavies, mediums and lights. Assaults are more likely to be "boats" or 'Mechs that stack a single variety of weapons, and non-assault mechs tend to die more quickly. Statistically, the team with the heavier overall weightclass typically wins, unless a team attempts to cap and fails, in which that team typically loses, even if it is a single light capper. That one shocked me a bit as I saw it repeatedly, but isn't too surprising overall, as weight being present affects the outcome of head-on fights for obvious reasons.

When playing Conquest only mode, teams have a tendency to be more evenly dispersed between all four weight tiers, with an emphasis on heavies and sometimes mediums. Assaults tend to be more ballanced, with noticeably fewer "boats" and noticeably more streaks, LLs, LPLs and MLs. Players in conquest are more willing to break off from fights, and less willing to camp. Typically, the first players to die are players who are alone, or using sub-par chassis. (Such as DRG or AWS variants, which require greater pilot skill and are not good for new players.)

Conclusion: With exceptions, the heavier the Mech the pilot prefers, the more likely the pilot is to prefer straightforward combat involving less movement and strategy, with an emphasis on large-alpha builds and blob teams. Those "boaters" who prefer to select their gametypes generally prefer Assault to Conquest.

The lighter the variants the pilot prefers, the more likely they are to use balanced builds and win matches with strategy rather than blunt force, dividing weapons among 2-4 types and generally being willing to take ammo-bearing weapons over PPCs. Players who do not choose boats primarily and also prefer to select mission types generally select Conquest.

If you dislike boats and matches that are outside of BT canon weights, play Conquest. If all you want to do is slug it out and use heavy machinery to put holes in things, play Assault.

OP fails to recognize balanced boats (5ML Jenner, 9ML Hunchback, etc.) or unbalanced mechs that don't boat (1 Gauss, 2 (ER)PPC, 3 Streak Highlander).

The Balanced/Boat distinction is completely illegitimate and the poll should be disregarded.

This isnt a poll about boats. It's a post about a trend I've noticed when playing exclusively one match type or another and a poll about peoples size tier and gametype preferences. Nothing more.

Overall I find conquest an overwhelmingly better game mode. It wouldn't break my heart to see assault completely removed and replaced with something more interesting. Even king of the hill would be a more interesting objective than the base camp mode that assault is.

Whenever a team tries to "assault blob" in conquest they often get capped out particularily on the larger maps. But even on the smaller ones I've seen them get capped out by lighter teams that are smart enough to avoid them.

I always enjoy conquest matches more than assault matches. Assault is usually a steamroller in one way or another, but conquest is always hard for both teams to win.

My original Centurion build was a CN9-A that had a couple tweaks to it, added endo steel and DHS, upped the armor, removed the LRMs for two SRM-6 packs, left the engine the same. It was pretty slow but a lot of people made the mistake of ignoring it as it wasn't the triple SRM-6 zombie most people associate with effective centurion builds. I got to 10th place in the first death march tournament using it.

I also had a CN9-D that I kept the 300XL in but replaced the weapons with a gauss rifle that I had a lot of fun with.

right now I'm using a combination of my two favorite Centurion builds. It has a 250XL engine that gives me almost 90kph speed which makes me pretty quick and able to return to base to respond to cappers in assault or cap points in conquest. It has a gauss rifle, 2 medium lasers, and 2 SRM4s. It loses the zombie effect but its a pretty versatile build, having a lot of fun with it. It doesn't overheat and it can do a lot of damage up close and has the speed to flank around enemy boats.

Most of my time is spent in Hunchbacks and Cicadas, with a health dose of Jenner, Atlas, and Stalker.

I almost always roll Random.

Most of my builds are pretty balanced, though I tend to role-specialize (lots of brawlers and fire support builds, along with some scouts/harassers).

Match maker does not make a difference between game types at the moment.
Conquest + Large Map + Lots of Lights on one team = unbalanced.
