keep it as close to battletech (you said this a long time ago) because mechwarrior 2 and 3 were the greatest mech combat sims ever created because of it (all they had was the boating and jump sniping issue)....just looking at this game and seeing IGN dub it a shooter just ticks me off because thats not the goal of mechwarrior.
----------------------------------
non random criticals (hitting the areas were its slightly uprotected should give the ability to damage the internals)
the max range given for that weapon stays as the max range (this could solve all the poptarting) and boating)
slower engine on heat
instant mech explosion once you go above 120% heat
slower mechs when going uphill
external camera (ignore the whiners because it was implemented in the clans demo
in the clans demo there is a camera that will follow you around but its slow and takes time to adjust so that should balance it if it were destructable)

I have to vote no to the through armor critical hits unless you could convince me there was absolutely NO randomness involved with it.

The external camera moves the game AWAY from being a "sim" and TOWARDS being "arcade".

I support the rest of the suggestions.
