I know, another newbie builder wanting to upgrade...but from what I've been reading all of you seasoned builders have been very helpful. I've read all the posts, most recently the sticky of the "myths", and a few others. I've spent a few hours researching on Newegg and here's two build lists, one Intel, the other AMD. I'll post links to my public wishlist...let me know if that is too cumbersome and I'l write out the components...my hope is that I can use the hard drive and disc drive out of my current HP Pavilion, which is about 2 years old. The HD is 1 TB capacity. Both builds come to about $1k. I'm asking if you can let me know what I'm missing, if I've over/under speced anything etc...

Don't link your wishlists from your account. We won't be able to see them.

Instead, make the wishlist public and grab its number (ID) from the link. Then go to anyone else's wishlist that's public and substitute your ID for theirs, then link that.

Newegg is slow for including your wishlist in the public search, so that's how I always link mine. As it is linked right now, none of us can see it.

As we can't see either without your account info (something you don't want to give out.) I'll just give you my recommendations.
Note; this is without needing an OS. And yes, you can reuse your HDD, though you may have to get a new OS key.

Just my recommendation. The reason I recommend the SilentX heatsink over the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo is the fan lasts longer, is far quieter, and performs nearly as well.

Your builds look fine, but the power supplies are overkill. You won't need 1000W for that kind of PC, even if you're overclocking and overvolting.

Also, I would NOT reuse your old hard drive. The optical drive re-use is fine, but get a faster, newer hard drive, SSD, or combination of the two.

I made some adjustments already to the lists. Thanks for fixing those links. I've always been a "ohhh...shiny" kind of buyer so this is helping to ground me and create a more realistic, balanced, and less expensive build.

What HD would you recommend? I'm running Windows 7 right now so I have the discs, I guess I would need to buy a new key from MS?

The hardware looks good, I'm always a fan of more RAM so personal preference I'd go for at least 12gb. My biggest suggestion is, do research plan what you want, and start ordering stuff as it comes on sale, I've built great machines that at normal prices would be well over $2200, for less than $1200 just for being patient and waiting for good sales and rebates, I know being patient is hard in the computer world, but for grand I can learn how.

Oh, there is one other thing, I agree with cipher, get a higher performance HD, I had my doubts but a good new SSD makes a WORLD of difference on a new system.

It says that, however the Radeon HD 7970 has a peak power usage of about 250 watts, on average at load it consumes around 210. Even if you were going with your original 6870, it has a peak power usage of about 180 watts.

12 GB of RAM is horrible in a dual-channel setup, you're reducing it's stability that way as there are no 6GB or 3GB DIMMs, and as such are creating an imbalance which is harder on the RAM controller.

HD wise, if you can put in some more money for a booting SSD of around 120GB or so, I say go for it. However, if gaming is your primary concern, then leave your storage for last.
