What are the official colors on the firebrand? I'm thinking of repainting it, but am seriously considering buying the colors just in case I want to revert to the original flavor.

No need to...the hero colors stay in the background on the color palette.

^ You just have to be careful to leave them there. If you overwrite them then they are gone as far as I know.
EDIT: I would suggest you mess around with the mechanics of the paint system to get an understanding of them before you save your new paint scheme (and make sure you have the Firebrand paint in the background pallet).
