I heard there were knockdowns, even more that mechs could knock down other mechs.
But why have they been removed? Shouldn't they be put back?

I wasn't there when knockdowns were in. But from what I've heard, they were bugged - you had mechs "falling through the map" and such. So they took them out, but they intend to put them back in later on.

They were incredibly glitchy. When a mech was knocked down, it would start rubber banding all over the place since the game was unable to decide where it actually was. Since it would take a while to fix, PGI decided to just remove the feature until they had fixed it on their end.

That was a different issue, although there were some glitches with it sometimes.

Knockdowns were in the game. But they didn't work very well - there was a certain amount of griefing, and mechs rubber-banding when they were knocked down (bouncing between a couple of points, and not being where they appeared to be). Dragons were particularly good at knocking down anything, and we had Dragon conga lines knocking down entire teams and keeping them down for extended periods.

Overall, they were pretty bad. Nice idea, poor implementation.

because they were overdone and none of it was from weapon impacts. Like if a Light bumped into a Heavy the Light fell down and was destroyed before it could move away.

The biggest reason they took out colisions IIRC is when a mech was moving fast and got knocked over, that mech's hitboxes would be some metres away from the actual mech once it got up and running again. This made for indestructable mechs, unless of course you could find the invisible hit boxes.

this

devs got griefed on a live stream

they cried a bit, then removed the entire game mechanic

babies.

if a 150kph mech bumps into an 80kph mech the 150kph mech deserves to die

with all that speed there is no excuse for being tackled

They removed it because it was flat out unfinished and buggy. The griefing of the dev player just accelerated the removal. If you think they removed it only because of the griefing part then that's pretty silly.

So people complain when the devs actually play the game and run into something broken, then take action and remove it to fix earlier. Yet, if they never played the game it may have been in longer and continued to be abused.

it was glitchy but not broken

+ the only glitchy aspect was the standing up animation

and if you waited like 1.5 seconds to fire the animation wouldnt hurt your aim

it was a good mechanic

needed refinements not removal

I doubt it will ever return

I disagree, it was in need of a massive overhaul. It'll be reintroduced after launch like a lot of things. Better late than never.

We still don't even have the ability to knock over trees and street lights. That was said to be coming what 4-5 months ago? PGI is horrendously slow in releasing fixes or re-implementing removed mechanics.

PGI cant even get collisions to work properly anymore. I doubt knockdowns will be back in MWO in any meaningful time frame.

Instead they will just throw more 'content' at the game and hope the bandaid holds.

Most of these mentioned issues have to do with netcode. It's by far been the biggest hurdle, preventing knockdown, top speed for mechs, and big weapon balance changes. Since we're starting to get past netcode issues they can probably start to re-implement things and otherwise move forward.

As for breakable street lights and trees, that's only player side as well as purely cosmetic so I imagine it's a very low priority.

When they`re not obviously broken, yes.

They have been ETAd for sometime after release, :)

I think knockdowns were removed for, aside from the broken way of standing up, for some kind of "they dont look professional" type of lampshading. I do miss dragon bowling, even though I'd been on the wrong end of it more than once. And if you were in a light mech, you actually had to use some measure of piloting skill instead of nuthumping larger mechs for kills.

Now, instead of mechs warping around when they stand up from a knock down, they just warp around when they touch each other.
