I'm imagining something lock-on based, so that you can leverage your maneuvering and positioning SKILL, although I guess I could see the touchpad lending itself to the fine movements needed for sniping (assuming you resigned yourself to dying if a light starts circling you or you have nerves of steel and a decent engine rating ).

I played with a wacom tablet for a while. It was great for torso and general aiming control, but the lack of extra buttons made weapon groups kinda tricky, and the buttons on the stylus made the reticle twitch when I needed the fine control for more precise aiming. I supposed I could have just remapped my weapon group keys, but the novelty wore off before I got to that.
As for using an actual touchpad, I hope you don't like winning much.

I use a mouse and have remapped the buttons. I use my mouse buttons to target, and 4X zoom... so not for a whole lot. All my fire control is done with my left hand. This allows for no reticule jitter at all. I highly recommend it.
