In a situation where the teams are uneven and it is already too late for anyone to join to balance out the teams (but still prior to first contact), why not have a little message appear for everyone on the team with more members?
Something like:
"Sit this one out? Y/N"
or
"Press INSERTKEYHERE to retire"
Of course there would have to be some sort of incentive to encourage people to do this, and there would need to be limits both on the window of opportunity for agreeing to sit the match out, and how many people can accept.
The details would need to be hashed out (could the people who retire immediately use their mechs in another match, or would they have to wait for it to finish, etc). But at least it would prevent some massacres.

Alternatively they could just fix matchmaking, but even under ideal circumstances this sort of thing is bound to come up sometimes due to disconnects, etc.
