Today, I found myself thinking, "Gee, I'd like some more mechbays to try some new mechs, maybe I should put down some cash for some MC."

So I come to the website to plonk down my money but oh, hey! a new Ask the Devs thread! I'll check that out first!

So I read it, and then I put my credit card away.

Wait.... so you think NONE of those things happened? Wow, I've truly read it all now.

You lack reading comprehension.
A few details (things that did happen) do not legitimize further hyperbole.

PGI reversed their original statements =/= therefore the game is a failure.

Ha ha, he he, I'm so clever for actually reading between the lines.
seriously is it really that hard to think things through before forming a conclusion/reaction? I must be a freak of nature then; I'm so embarrassed.

At least we get to actually try them out on the test servers before actual implementations are made and give PGI our then EDUCATED opinions instead of chirping like dingbats before anything has actually been shown.

Any of you closed beta people remember saying this would NEVER happen either?

On the contrary; that is one reversal I'm excited for.

GL on being able too carry MW:O with your maybe 10,000 players that enjoy this MW4 meta that killed the game. that's where the core simheads around 100,000+ go play Chris Roberts new game, he will make the right choices for the player base

its funny cus hes got 10 mil and climbing and he dosent even have a alpha out wonder where that cash is coming from :)

he's even got EVE makers scare that it will steal all the eve players (wink, wink)

Yup.

Mechwarrior online is being usurped by mech assault console nubs it would seem. Must be a rich and large group of the playerbase that never visits these forums nor bothers making their voices heard anywhere but in invisible PGI support emails or some other mystical way they have of telling PGI third person will make all the difference in the big money rolling in. However maybe MWO will make the new xbox...who knows? honestly as long as 3rd doesnt give the big advantages it did in mech4 i could care less really. I'd even like an option to play 1st with 3rd person people if it's not gamebreaking.

Reasonable news on the jumpjets. To bad we won't see collisions for release. or will we? :)

Wierd answer on the quickdraw. we're talking about a 60 ton mech that is a trebuchet basically, the orion would seem to me to fit the "variety" more since we don't even have a 75 tonner yet and the orion is like a mini atlas, something we don't really have in game otherwise right now.

If "testing" them out on "test servers" is anything like the way Cryptic puts things on their "test server" the only thing tested will be game stability (did the game crash? yes/no) and whatever it was being "tested" will be pushed live anyway as long as the game didn't crash. And believe me as a long time STO player, PGI does things more and more like Cryptic does every day MWO gets closer to release. If you think anyone's opinion on "testing" matters, I have several bridges and swamps for sale. Please call now, operators are standing by.

Because for the longest time, PGI has not said "hey we're going to test xyz, tell us what you think." They push some change live and wait for the crap to hit the fan first before they make any changes. After all, this IS Beta and what we're supposed to be doing is testing, not accepting whatever is shoved down our throats. But that's not the case anymore.

Good luck with 'point in vain'

>.>

Can you say something useful please regarding the discussion?

Now to jump topics; first, this obviously has nothing to do with MWO, an independent publisher is producing a game from crowd-source funds and is not tied to a publisher or copy-rights with a pre-existing canon. So the producer can do what ever he wants. So your point is moot.

On the other hand I admit that looks sexy and awesome as ****. I'll be watching this game closely, so thankyou.

I can see that happening in the far future so good point; but contrary, being in open beta hasn't stopped them from releasing sloppy unstable builds. We will see; point is, consider the possibilities and wait until it's been delivered.

It is a bible quote but I assumed most here would recognize it from other places (like Ghost in The Shell). I did not use that to insult anyone, it was said to demonstrate my perspective that, though fun like arcade games, MWO should be held to a higher standard.
Personally I feel words are words, neither insightful nor inflammatory regardless of the source - I am sorry if you are offended.

What does religion have to do with a video game on the internet? If anything, playing video games for hours at a time would make you guilty of the Judeo-Christian vice of sloth.

I'm starting to question your decision to go with cryengine. If you're gonna lower all graphics forever, why didn't you go unreal in the first place?

I was thinking that very recently too. They're catering heavily towards lower end spec systems and it's really disappointing for someone with a higher end computer. Especially for someone who bought new components specifically to enjoy this games fidelity. Seeing that "loyalty" (lack of a better word) to be slowly reduced down to cater to the Future shop HP desktop mini computers that are running on-board Intel HD graphics is disappointing to see. Mechs feet not aligning to the ground, less smoke, less particles, standardized damage textures, laser burn accuracy thrown out the window. It's sad to see, but my hope is that all that will return once they start ramping up the graphics once they have a solid grasp on the min spec optimization... but that doesn't mean I'm not worried...

CryEngine, to me, has always been the epitome of the highest fidelity, top of the line graphics, with beautiful environments and ornate detail. Lately it seems that it's just turned out to be a complex engine that PGI is having too many difficulties with.

These two quotes are the ones that cause me the most concern. FPV isn't hardcore mode, it's the defacto STANDARD for a MechWarrior game. If anything FPV should be Normal mode and 3PV should be "Training Mode", or maybe "Rookie Mode".

This is the point Bryan, the root of 3PV being so abhorrent to MechWarrior fans is that it goes against what the franchise is supposed to be ABOUT; the game is based around the player being IN the cockpit of a 100 ton war machine. If you mess with that, you're messing with the very foundations on which every single previous MechWARRIOR game was based. Fair enough having 3PV as an option should you feel it's commercially beneficial to do so but please for the love of Kerensky don't market it as the "normal" and make FPV some sort of oddball mode for purists and hardcore fans.

Paul Inoye, July 17, 2012:

Quote

MechWarrior Online is being designed to put you the player in the seat of the pilot. It is 100% first person view only. Being the pilot is one of our key design pillars and 3rd person breaks that pillar on multiple levels as seen in many of the other 3rd Person discussions.

We will investigate 3rd person in the far off distance for special game settings, but this is very far off in the distance.

While we appreciate those who enjoy 3rd person, MWO will be 1st person out of the gate and in the near future.

[...]
The plan is to have scheduled matches will be FPV only, since these will be performed between Merc. Units. Regular matches will follow the above rules (Normal/Hardcore).
[...]
Probably not, however we’re going to emphasize that both view modes are essential to a well-rounded experience, with FPV being something that you use if you are a true sim-head.

So...

From "100% first-person view only" and "3rd person in the far off distance for special game settings" to "We anticipate most players will play the first mode" and "FPV being something that you use if you are a true sim-head" in just under a year.

:)

And the thing that really has me questioning if they've completely gone off their rockers: "TT is just a guideline and not really applicable to a realtime simulation".

What happened to "we want to stay as close to TT as possible"?

Really PGI. Go back and re-read your dev blogs. That's the game you promised us and got us to spend our founder's money for. That's the game you should strive to deliver.

If PIGs will ever throw 1st person and 3rd person together in one queue, what I want to see is 4-man 1st person Master Race Death Lances dropping in this mode and steamrolling all day every day, making PUGging in this mode next to impossible for lowest common denominator 3rd person players.

CryEngine doesnt mean the game will look great or will have great performance if the devs dont do anything good with it.

crysis 2 could run with over 40 frames on a dual core, while mwo cant even go to 30 frames with one.

whats dissapointing about the CryEngine is that it doesnt support 2 rendered pictures at once, like rear view mirrors that even the first racing games had.

That's cool, I didn't hear about this Star Citizen until your post was enough info to check it out. That's awesome! Its too bad PGI decided to go for the 3rd person players we don't know about instead of working with what they had.

I guess there is some good news on the forums anyway. Maybe I can pilot a tiny little ship and kill people again, that'd be fun.
