Meh. It doesn't make sense for it to be slow or 'splash'. If we're talking particles then they'd need to be accelerated by a huge amount to do damage (thus high projectile speed), a lot of it kinetic, and if we're talking plasma then the extremely high temperatures is what does the main damage and it wouldn't 'splash', and it also wouldn't form a stable 'ball'. It would be like a Melta in the Warhammer universe - a extremely bright, short range beam that cuts through armour like it's plastic.
What we have now is a mixture of both. Not really a particle projector but not really a plasma blaster either.
I much prefer the current system over MW2's.
