The devs know the player count and that should be enough.

They don't need the people complaining. if they are doing something wrong they can see it themselves from the player drop.
They will release a player count when they feel its right. But probably never do a counter.

It might have the dreaded effect of showing low numbers and so giving lots of fuel to whining about the game dying.
Or it might have exactly the opposite effect with high numbers.
And, most likely BOTH, if the numbers are neither especially low or high.

Removing the player counter opened the game up to speculation as to why.
PGI has nothing to gain from putting it back now, as far as I can tell.

Even if it was a realtime "players online" counter and were updated every .5 seconds, and it showed 2 million active players +/-, the detractors would find a way to twist the number to their perceived advantage. Possible examples:
"Only 2 million online? That`s less thatn WoT, WTF?"
"What? all week there were only 1.8 million players online, 200k less than last week. The game is dying!"
"Impossible, at least 5000k of those have to be alts or test accounts"
"There is no real time data, that number is a fake"
and at least a dozen more that I can`t be arsed to dream up becasue I`ve done enough mental gymnastics for one day trying to understand some of the more outlandish crap some people post....

We had a counter in closed beta. It was removed because the devs were afraid that players would catch on they are making bad decisions by watching the player count drop.
They keep hiding behind the "oh, well, there's different people on at different peak times." No crap, Any seasoned game player that knows anything about the games they play, knows that different times= different numbers of players on.
As an example, if I'm playing on a monday morning at say. 11am PST. I know that for the most part, there's not going to be many players on... maybe a couple of thousand... However if I'm playing at say, 4pm PST on a Friday evening. Most popular games will see that number multiply by 4 or higher[generally higher.]
PGI is afraid we'll see a sinking ship, and enough people already sense this ship is sinking. So what's the harm in returning it frankly? People will always find something to complain about, and frankly, knowing how many people are in game at any given time can help to bolster the community by drawing players in who see just how many people are playing the game.

It makes absolutely no difference to the community, the game or anything else whether or not we can see how many players on at any given time.
The only stats that are worth a damn is how much money they are making, and the time taken to get into a decent game.
I don't know what the first one is, and if it wasn't doing enough we wouldn't be looking at a full launch.
The second, well as a near exclusive Pugger, i've never had more than a few seconds wait at any time of day, can't speak for the 8 man ques, though.
I'd say on both counts they are doing okay.
As for the sinking ship thing, well there are enough doomsayers as it is quite frankly I'm tired of them as it is let alone give them another metric to ignore/get up in arms about.

"Those numbers are so low, the game is dying!"
"There are fewer players on now than there were five minutes ago. Y U KILL GAME DEVS!?!?!?"
Yeah... no thanks.

This kind of statistic is only useful to investors and people who want to make posts about how the game is dying. And those people are going to make the posts anyway, so why bother.

I fully agree. I would like a player counter, but once it was removed, there was no way back.
